A constant receptor to lightning bolts of inspiration, Erika is the author of 10 narrative short films, 4 feature films, a TV pilot, and has written multiple commission screenplays. Her debut feature film, A Song For Imogene, premiered at Bentonville Film Festival in 2023 before going on to win Best Feature at The Rhode Island International Film Festival and open Cucalorus Film Festival back in her hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina. Kristi Ray is a multi-hyphenate creative who’s been making waves in the independent film scene for the past fifteen years. Classically trained at Lee Strasberg in New York City, her work as a leading lady gravitates toward dynamic characters and strong, compelling, female-centric stories. She has won several awards for her work in cinema, including Best Actress, Best Narrative Feature, Best Supporting Actress, and Outstanding Performer of the Year along with many other nominations. 8-Part Screenwriting Lab: Mock Writers' Room - Break Story on a Network 1 Hour Procedural Drama

Starting: Tuesday, September 3rd

Instructor: Kate Sargeant

Much of the attention in recent years has been on streaming platforms, but it would be foolish to overlook network dramas that continue to not only draw huge crowds but can stay on the air for many more seasons than their streaming counterparts. Throughout this intimate eight-week interactive virtual lab, Kate will delve into the craft of the network procedural hour drama and then lead you through a mock CSI: CYBER writers' room, where you will gain experience pitching A, B, and C story ideas, breaking the episode on a virtual whiteboard as a group, and then practice pitching acts to the showrunner. What better way to learn than to break the PILOT of a new CSI spinoff? Not only will you experience what it’s like to work in a writers’ room – but you will also have hands-on experience breaking the pilot of a TV show. Through both Kate’s lessons and her leading of the writers’ room, you will gain direct, practical, and real-world experience that you can take with you as you pursue your television career.

Kate Sargeant is an accomplished television writer with especially deep experience in network procedural dramas, working on over 100 episodes of network TV on shows like CASTLE, CSI: CYBER, NCIS: NOLA, and BLINDSPOT. 8-Part Budget Lab: Create a Professional Budget & Schedule for Your $1MM-$3MM Feature Film

Starting: Saturday, September 7th

It's common for filmmakers to make missteps when budgeting, especially if they're new to the process. Misjudging costs, overlooking essential expenses, or failing to allocate funds properly can all lead to significant challenges. These mistakes can delay production, compromise the quality of your film, or cause you to run out of money before the project is completed. In this exclusive 8-part interactive lab, you’ll begin with a formal script breakdown, which will flag potential big-ticket items. You will then use that vital information to inform your decisions to create a budget tailored to your script; from hiring cast and crew to getting the film distributed. You will learn how to budget for both above and below-the-line crews, based on current SAG/AFTRA and IATSE rules. You will also learn the art of Film Scheduling and all that goes into getting your project locked into a production calendar. There are many factors that you would never think of when scheduling a film that you only learn from experience or quality instruction, which is why we brought in such a stellar educator.

Write Your Feature Rom-Com Outline in 8-Weeks

Starting: Saturday, September 14th

Instructor: Matthew Chen

Many aspiring screenwriters face pitfalls when tackling romantic comedies. These can include relying too heavily on clichés, failing to develop memorable characters, or overlooking the importance of a strong, coherent story arc. Throughout this eight-week virtual online lab, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the romantic comedy genre and the essential elements that make a screenplay stand out. You will learn what executives look for in a good story and romantic comedy as well as delve into themes, character creation, and conflict. You will leave this lab with a strong understanding of story and character arcs, and how rom-coms fit into the three-act structure. By the end of this lab, you will have a well-structured outline that sets you up for success in writing your romantic comedy screenplay.

In addition to private Zoom classes in a small writers' room setting you will also have one-on-one Zooms with Matthew and direct access to him via email to help you with your outline!

Matthew Chen is an experienced Development Executive/Producer who most recently served as Senior Director of Development for Film & Television at Reese Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine, where he worked on numerous television and film projects, ranging from pitch to release and every stage of development/production/post in between. Over 7 interactive sessions, you will build your own investor pitch deck under the guidance of an industry expert to help you nail the copy, content, and design to create a deck that wows. You will also review several different decks that have been used with great success and explore what to include and the secrets to decks that convert. You will walk away from this online lab with your completed pitch deck for your project that has been vetted by Sara Elizabeth, so you can go out and start raising money!
