If I wanted to turn some fictional novels into movies, I know that it would be useful to ask the author and possibly the publisher. This begets the main question: how would I usually go about doing that? There are some novels I would love to turn into movies. I am learning about screenwriting at a slow rate but I am definitely interested in making movies one day.

Figure out who owns the rights first. Look inside the book and contact the publisher. Often there is a department devoted to these matters. Once you find out who owns the rights and if that party is agreeable, option the book. This will take money and an attorney familiar with this part of the law.

The book publisher likely owns the rights. They usually tie up all the rights to any property they buy, film rights, foreign language rights, e-book rights. You would deal with them. If the author self published, you would deal directly with him or her. You need to get an attorney to draw up the paperwork so everything is nice and legal. Good luck.
