How "Independent" are Independent Films?

The indies we knew as "indies" 10 to 15 years ago don't really exist anymore. The indies of yesteryear have all been reduced to the micro level, in terms of budget: http://williamdickersonfilmmaker.com/the-microbudget-revolution/ In one respect, it makes it easier to make films these days--especially when the tech is readily available--in the other, it means many more indies are being made, most of which will not get traditional distribution. The more movies being made, the greater the competition out there in the world. Is this good or bad, in your opinion? And do you think the world of independent film that we once embraced a few years ago will, eventually, build itself back up again?
