A question -- is there some way to send a message to everyone in one's network? Or do they have to be sent individually?

You would have to do this individually. They do this to prevent spam and promote personal attention, so I think the benefit outweighs the inconvenience. If you have something you'd like to share with everyone in your network, you can post it to your wall and it'll show up in their feed.
