Hi Jeff, I would say that Star Wars and Doctor Who influenced me the most, they came out when I was a teenager. I do like David Drake novels. My writing - I always try to put in a couple unique actions scenes that hasn't been done before in every movie. I am the only David Gwinn in IMDb.
I'm more of the Heinlein generation. I loved his Starship Troopers as a novel, but the movie made a hash of the underlying theme of service. The groundbreakers for me were The Day the Earth Stood Still and Forbidden Planet. Star Wars is huge, but there's room to do better, I think. Mars Attacks was a great parody of 1950's SciFi films, really fun. Solo shot first.
I did read the Starship Trooper novel, you're right it was much better than the movie.
