https://stephenfollows.com/what-the-average-screenplay-contains/ Hats off to you Stephen Follows.
Simply amazing!
And of course, some academic myths fall:
- the use of V.O.
- the overall importance of such elements as format, hook, originality, structure, theme, pacing, and even conflict!!!
- etc.
Having a comparison between non-produced and produced scripts would be great too, and I bet it should break even more myths.

I wrote and directed a feature where the script was only 55 pages, 4 characters, and the budget at $10k and the entire crew consisted of a whopping 4 persons. This was done just to see if we could actually do it. The result came with mixed reviews--people either loved it or hated it. So why mention this? I think this industry has trapped itself into conventional thinking per the creative side of things. Stephen Follows demonstrates through his research that we have several norms. That is great. But, what he doesn't show is what happens when those norms are broken. That is the type of research I would really love to see more than anything knowing the industry as a whole is dramatically changing.
For those interested, this is the trailer for the movie I mentioned which I created. Not posting this to help promote sales but rather to show some things can be done these days with high quality yet low tech. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5212542/videoplayer/vi3316693273

I've worked with Stephen before and he taught an unbelievable class here on Stage 32 on crowdfunding (it's in our Education library). No one does research like him. He's incredible.
