Producing : 3 things that owning my own film agency has taught me... by Jacob Matthew

Jacob Matthew

3 things that owning my own film agency has taught me...

1. If making money is your sole entrepreneurial purpose, quit. There are easier ways to do that.

- If you want to make money, go get into sales. The only reason to start your own business is to add value into the world that you feel can’t happen within a pre-existing organization or without your unique vision. Just simply building wealth is not a good enough reason to start a business.

2. Partnerships are necessary, because the emotional toll of entrepreneurialism is too much to do alone.

- As you go along your entrepreneurial journey, you will also learn that it isn’t as much fun as everyone around you believes it to be. Money, perks, and everything visible to the world pales in comparison to the pressures of carrying out the tasks at hand and growing the company. Therefore, make sure you have a business partner to carry the load with. I would never own a company by myself.

3. Nobody can handle power without accountability, especially me.

- Lastly, the mistakes you make don’t mean a slap on the wrist, they often mean damage that has lasting effects on the company. Get accountability early and often to prevent these mistakes before they happen.

I'm retired after about 40 years in industry, the last 25-30 years I was self employed and ran my own firm. I wholeheartedly disagree with you. I never had a partner - at one time I had 20 employees & 3 offices. I was the captain of my fate and I loved it. I guess that's just me - sounds to me that it's not for you.

I love this reflection, Jacob Matthew, thank you for sharing! For my part, I wholeheartedly relate to and agree with #1, I struggle with #2 often because I do not reach out and ask for help, and #3 is a lesson I hope no one ever learns the hard way, whether the stakes are minor or life-and-death, as in the case of Halyna.

Agree with #1 and #3. #2, not at all. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Thanks for sharing - and I agree that proper alignment with partners helps make for a better product in the end - as well as, money is not the reason to work in film making! I do it for the story and the impact.
