Script read and Skype feedback with Sean E., Marvel Studios

I’ve been working on my sci/fi feature screenplay for a while now and after receiving most encouraging feedback and a double consider through Stage32 coverage services, then pitching it and receiving further feedback, I decided a script read and a conversation would be helpful.

I was fortunate to secure exactly that with Sean E. at Marvel Studios which, after rescheduling by a day, took place yesterday. So I had another 24 hours to get very nervous!

My chat with Sean was outstanding. His first words were “This was a fun read”. Not only did he “get” my story and enjoy reading it, his feedback was detailed, helpful and inspiring. I felt we were able to connect through the story, even though we were on opposite sides of the world, and our conversation was enormous fun.

With Sean’s help I’m excited to get back to work on my story to move my script from good to great as my goal for 2022.

Congrats on the great feedback, Ingrid Wren. After reading this, I'm considering getting another Stage 32 feedback.

Martin Reese

That sounds great Ingrid Wren. Keep us posted on your progress.

Solange Plaza

Congrats. Best of luck to you!

Thank you for the encouragement! Working on it today and finding my dilemma is making things clear enough without "lecturing" the audience or ruining the flow of the story. How much information is too much?

Martin Reese

Hey Ingrid Wren that is the dilemma with sci-fi. To some degree you have to trust your audience to understand. You definitely don't want to lecture the audience or have on-the-nose dialog. There are probably some good scripts to checkout like GRAVITY.

Maurice Vaughan

I struggle with deciding how much is too little and how much is too much, Ingrid Wren. I've learned that the audience is smarter than a writer thinks. I second Martin Reese's comment.

Sasha Myshkina

Ingrid Wren Congratulations! That's incredible and I'm so happy for you. The problem you're facing is a pretty common one known as "info dumping", which, as Martin Reese correctly said, is very common with science fiction because of how much worldbuilding there is. As someone who has written a fair deal of science fiction, my advice would be to try and weave the explanations through the dialogue of other characters in their interactions with the main character and with each other. For example, take The Matrix, in my opinion, a great film with a great script. A lot of the exposition and world building is done through explanations to the protagonist. If your film is about a character finding things out at the same rate the audience is finding things out, you can use that to your advantage. Additionally, you can sneak information in through things such as radio transmissions, newspapers/websites the protagonist is reading, signs, overheard conversations etc. Best of luck with yous script, I can't wait to see it on the big screen!

Amazing :-)

So glad to hear you had a good experience! I'm excited to see where your script goes from here.

Ingrid Wren

Thankyou Sasha for your helpful advice. I'm working through the script as you describe and finding that one small thing changed at the beginning has a ricochet effect through the script. So a small thing turns into a big thing! But it's all good. My conversation with Sean followed though on previous feedback, gave me a solid kick in the right direction and sparked my imagination again in a way that got lost while I was focussed on structure and technical stuff. My script doesn't pretend to be anything other that a rollicking action adventure story and a great deal of fun. P.S. I'm copying your comments and adding them to my notes... I hope this is OK. Thank you again.

Ingrid Wren

Thankyou Martin Reese and Maurice. My other half is my sounding board and because he hasn't read any sci/fi, although he certainly watches it, we argued yesterday about whether the audience will understand what a 'jump drive' does... But, sometimes he has good suggestions too! I guess the message is: be clear and respect your audience.

Alejandro Marello

Ingrid Wren Congratulations! You have made an excellent script.

It must be gratifying to have received double recommendation and praise.

I hope the film materializes soon

best regards :)-
