Webinar coming soon! Pre-Production: The Assistant Director’s Process

Learn From Michael Bishop for his exclusive webinar!

Before the Director, Producer, Line Producer, Production Manager, Location Manager can begin to have a clear understanding on the scope, workflow, and cost of making a film, the next natural step is the hiring of a 1st Assistant Director. This is true whether you are shooting a commercial, music video, low budget indie Film, a hallmark movie of the week or a twenty Million Dollar Production. In this webinar Michael will break down the preparation process from the first calls with the Director and Producer and creating the prep schedule, to preparing the schedule one-liner and planning the final tech survey and production meeting. All of which are designed to support a smooth day 1, when production starts principle photography.

When tackling the prep process as a 1st Assistant Director, it’s important to go in with a firm understanding of the fundamentals of what production is asking of you. One of the first jobs is diving into the script and inputting it into a software program which will allow you to organize all the information of the script into a realistic shooting schedule. This then becomes something that hopefully not only your producer will stand behind, but that your Director, Production Manager, Production Designer, and any other head of department will use as a beacon to do their jobs and prepare for a successful shoot.

Interested in hearing your take on being a 1st AD to a relatively inexperienced director. What kind of tasks can the 1st AD take over without appearing to be stepping on director's toes?

This looks like a really good one for aspiring directors to take note of.
