I spent the last week reading GroundHog Day, Naked Gun, Four Weddings & A Funeral and many of the screenplays I purchased in the 1990s. They're not just brilliantly written, but also inspirational. What are your favourite comedy screenplays?
hi, they are great pieces of work. I love American Pie. I am an Actor but want to get into writing. I just went to a BBC writers room workshop. It was the best two hours I've had in a long time. Onto writing my first article, for a magazine. Then a script for a TV pilot.
You might try Annie Hall on simply scripts or Manhattan if you can find it. Just try not to let judgement's of who wrote it interfere with reading it. They are interesting comedies.
Cherie, thank you, I took your advice and have just read The Hangover script. Really enjoyed it. Mitchell, also appreciate your comment. Manhattan is a work of art.
True.. very funny stuff.. Murder by Death is also a good film as is Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Young Frankenstein, Tootsie, MASH, A Fish Called Wanda, Duck Soup (or any Marx Brothers), When Harry met Sally
Danny's right -- the first DEATH AT A FUNERAL, he's referring to, is hilarious. It's rare that a comedy is funny on the page as much as it is on screen (for instance the 1st BRIDESMAIDS draft is boring as hell). Someone mentioned Pineapple Express, that's a good read as well.
Thank you for your comments. Jonathan, I agree with you on Monty Python and When Harry Met Sally. Will find Young Frankentein, BSaddles and MASH. Danny, thanks for the Death at a Funeral advice and well done on your no BS consulting blog, it's valuable.
Niraj, Hi, I'm working on a "back to the future" mystery comedy, loosely based on Raymond Chandler's" The Big Sleep".. I'm a huge comedy fan..they don't win awards, but they are always solid at the box office. Here's some comedies I recommend (not necessarily in order of importance), Anything by Monty Python or Mel Brooks and the following: Flirting with Disaster, Up in Smoke, Three Amigos, We're the Millers, Something About Mary, Caddy Shack, The Big Lebowski, My Cousin Vinny, Lost In America and Tropic Thunder. Good luck on your writing...Frank
Frank, good luck with your back to the future comedy. Thanks for the recommendations. read There's Something About Mary and being British I adore the Pythons. Will track down My Cousin Vinny and Tropic Thunder scripts
Monty Python is reuniting to do a comedy called "Absolutely Anything"..should be released in 2015..Google it and you'll get all the background information on the script, how they put the project together and got financing.
Marty, I've just read 10 Things I Hate About you - great recommendation, thank you. Nick, will check out The Royal Tenebaums tomorrow. Friends is wonderul

I love The Hangover. It's a really well written script and a funny film.
Also Pineapple Express is really funny to read. The dialogue is hilarious.

Alle, I don't read transcripts. They are useless to me.

I'm not sure any Python script is helpful for commercial writing.

10 Things I Hate About You. Even if you haven't seen it, you knows it's a great, funny movie just by reading the script.
