BABY TEETH
By Jacob Lazarow

GENRE: Horror, Drama
LOGLINE:

Forced to return to her hometown to recover from an injury, a loner must make amends with her estranged childhood best friend to unlock the truth about a derelict house from their past -- and the baby tooth she lost inside of it.

SYNOPSIS:

Sloane Wessell (mid-20s), fiercely independent but not good at being alone, dreams of looking through a hole in the fence gate of her childhood home. Through the hole, she watches her father, Tom Wessell (mid-30s), collapse on the porch of a decrepit old house before levitating and being pulled inside. She wakes up crying in her Brooklyn apartment.

Later, she has a tense conversation with her mother, Caroline, about coming home to visit. After she gets off the phone a photo of her as a 12-year-old and her father falls on her head, then a full shelf as well, knocking her out. She has a vision of burying her tooth in a garden with her father while he recites the Mourner’s Kaddish (the Jewish prayer to honor the dead).

She wakes up and struggled to stand. A previously unseen Elderly Man helps her up, and Sloane’s friend Nina finds her bloodied and sobbing.

Days later, Nina drives a bandaged Sloane to stay with her mother. On her childhood street, they pass by the Mitchell house, where Sloane’s childhood best friend Bentley (mid-20s), is helping his father Marty (late 50s) finish moving out of the house.

Bentley and Marty start to unpack in Marty’s new apartment, where Bentley finds a family photo from a photo studio. Bentley’s mother Molly, who recently passed away, looks sickly in the photo. He also discovers a picture of a family from the 40s in front of an old house that looks like the one from Sloane’s dream.

Marty and Bentley get dinner at a diner as Sloane and Nina leave, but Bentley doesn’t recognize Sloane because of her bandaged head. Bentley and Marty reminisce about Molly and how as a teenager she used to get into trouble at the local movie theater.

Bentley drives to the lot where The House once stood, and digs a baby tooth out from the center of the lot. Sloane walks to the lot and the two have a terse conversation. Bentley wants to talk about The House but Sloane isn’t interested, but she ends up suggesting they hang out since she’s back in town. She gives her condolences about his Mother and Bentley reveals his brother, Percy, recently began transitioning.

Bentley goes home and is startled by a vision of the same Elderly Man that helped Sloane up standing in the corner of his bedroom. He runs into the hallway and finds a nightlight in his closet to curl up next to.

Sloane has a similar dream as the one in Brooklyn, only this time she finds a baby tooth in the same spot Bentley did. She digs it out as blood begins to flow from the ground, and when she looks up she sees Tom collapse through the same hole in the fence gate.

In the morning, Sloane and Nina fight about Sloane not wanting to be back at home, and Nina drives off. Bentley visits Stew and Drew, former classmates and current library assistants. They give him a lead to an old friend, Devin, whose father, Hugo, is the boy in the photo.

Caroline asks Sloane if she wants to see the garden out back but Sloane declines. Instead, she asks Bentley to hang out, and the two go to the movie theater to loiter since that's what his mother and Caroline did when she was younger. When they’re driving away, the headlights on the car show the Elderly Man is watching them, but neither of them notices.

That night, Bentley dreams of the memory of the photo studio portrait he found. The rest of his family is frozen in place and, when he takes his spot in the photo, the Elderly Man stands behind the camera and takes the photo, freezing Bentley in pace with his family. The Elderly Man approaches Bentley and reaches out to him, but Bentley wakes up before he can touch him. When he wakes up, the Elderly Man is standing over him, reaching out. He runs out of the room again and takes shelter near the night light.

Sloane wakes up from another nightmare and runs to the abandoned lot, where she sees the memory of her running out of The House as a child, face bloody from a missing tooth. Young Bentley tries to get answers from her, but she runs off to tell her father that her final baby tooth fell out but she lost it.

Bentley visits Percy at school and he tries to explain that he’s working on figuring out why Molly had the photo. Percy claims this is an unhealthy way to grieve and the two argue until Percy storms out.

Sloane sneaks out to finally look at the garden, shocked to find that it’s absolutely flourishing. Caroline explains how it helped her after Tom died, but Sloane feels ownership over it because it was her thing she shared with Tom, especially the Tooth Cemetery of all of Sloane’s baby teeth. Caroline explains that the idea was actually hers originally, and Sloane runs out of the house.

She texts Bentley to pick her up, and the two go to the graveyard where both Molly and Tom are buried. They both open up about things that frustrated them about their parents. When Sloane goes to visit Tom’s grave, she’s startled by the site of the Elderly Man. She falls backward and hits her head on his headstone.

While unconscious, she has a vision of what she saw in The House when she was a child. In the vision, she sees the two apparitions of Hugo's parents and a teenage girl dressed in ‘80s clothes stealing the photograph that Bentley found.

As Sloane runs out as a child she trips and loses her last baby tooth in The House, then bikes back to her house and runs up to the fence gate before waking up.

Sloane wakes up and tells Bentley that she thinks his mother took the photo from the house when she was younger. Bentley takes her to his apartment to rest. She dreams of looking through the same hole in the fence gate, only this time when Tom collapses the Elderly Man steps out and carries him inside, before stepping back out and beckoning her in.

Sloane wakes up and the Elderly Man stands over her in Bentley’s bed, altering Bentley. When she explains he realizes they’re seeing the same person. The two argue about taking action, then about how Sloane left him alone after Tom’s death. The picture Bentley found is knocked off a table and the class is cracked, causing an unseen entity to become enraged and throw things across the room.

Sloane takes her photo and steals Bentley's car, distraught. Percy shows up to Bentley's apartment to make amends, and the two go to Stew and Drew’s friend’s house to look for clues, and discover that the Elderly Man is none other than Hugo, Devin’s dad as well as the boy in the photo.

Meanwhile, Sloane races to the empty lot only to find The House is standing again. Just as in the dream Tom collapses on the porch and Hugo comes out to get him. Sloane runs in after him and into the house. Shortly after, Bentley and Percy arrives and Bentley runs into the house as well.

Sloane ends up at the fence gate of her childhood home and Bentley in the photo studio where they took their portrait. Sloane enters and finds Tom there, but he’s stuck in a never-ending loop of the day when she came running home as a child. Covered in blood, she startles him and causes him to have a heart attack.

Bentley goes to take his place with his family as Sloane has a panic attack. Hugo counts down the photo but Bentley finds the baby tooth from the lot in his pocket and throws the family photo at Hugo before he can take the picture. The tooth falls out of his and Sloane coughs it up, giving her the strength to place it in the Tooth Cemetery and put Tom’s memory to rest.

She recites the Mourner’s Kaddish while Hugo gives Bentley back the frame and Bentley returns it to the table where Molly took it from, and the spirits of Hugo’s parents, as well as Hugo, move on. Sloane and Bentley walk out together. Back in the real world, Sloane smiles.
