CHASING THE DREAM
By Phil Savage

GENRE: Sports
LOGLINE:

Phil, A Canadian baseball coach needs more experience in order to live his dream of being a scout, spends the summer in NC as a volunteer assistant with a collegiate summer league team where he has to help win a lot of games in order to get the head coach on his side or it will be game over as far as a possible career in scouting.

SYNOPSIS:

A true story about a Canadian baseball coach who needs more experience in order to live his dream of being a baseball scout. Phil Savage goes to North Carolina for the summer as a volunteer assistant coach with a collegiate summer league team. The only team in the United States out of 200 plus teams to offer Phil the opportunity to watch, learn and help are the Forest City Owls.

While in North Carolina, Phil definitely runs into a few obstacles along the way. The three other coaches already know each other and get along really well which leaves Phil on the outside most of the time as he is not one of the “3 Amigos”.

Phil does find company and comfort with the players, which doesn’t go over well with the head coach although the players like to have Phil around; this makes for a tense situation over the course of the summer.

Hayes, the head coach, is superstitious like most baseball coaches are and allows this awkward situation in order to keep his players happy and winning. Winning baseball games is what this team does 85% of the time. Phil knows that he will not be “sent packing” by Hayes as long as the team keeps winning so he does whatever he can to help his team.

Most people don’t understand that winning almost every day is stressful as it turns into an obsession so Phil finds a way to be entertaining to everyone. Likable, by the players, and tolerable by his fellow coaches. Sometimes Phil has a knack for saying or doing things at the wrong time and there is no place for him to hide. Whether it’s on the team bus, the clubhouse or the dugout, Hayes is always watching or listening – waiting for Phil to screw up so he can let him have it.

The Forest City Owls of 2009 went 51-9. Winning the league championship and eventually becoming summer collegiate baseball national champions while breaking every record along the way. The local newspaper sports reporter said at the end of the season “this couldn’t ever be made into one of those based on a true story movies as nobody would believe it”.

Does Phil make it through the whole season and get the experience he so badly desires? Read the script and find out!
