Living their American Dream: Even if they can’t quite get it right
SYNOPSIS:
Will Taylor never had the desire to do anything with his life; until his only son is killed while deployed overseas. Will then sets out to fulfill his son's dream of opening a family restaurant in their hometown of Seattle. With three weeks to opening, Will assumes the faltered attempt of an acquaintance and purchases a business. Scrambling to meet the grand opening-and without a clue-he hires an eclectic group of individuals to help fulfill his son's dream.
Will Taylor was a good husband. Will Taylor was a good father. He just never had the desire to excel at anything. His wife chose a career overseas, so she and Will amicably divorce, and then shortly afterward their only child Cash enlists in the US Army. While on leave, Cash tells his father of his plans to open a family restaurant once his enlistment is over. Cash Taylor is killed during his second tour in Afghanistan -6 months after his death, Will runs into an old acquaintance that was in the process of opening a new family restaurant in Seattle. Discovering that he has inherited millions of dollars, the acquaintance offers Will the opportunity to take over the establishment; with one hitch. They need to open in three weeks. Will purchases the unnamed business, names it after his son Cash, and begins hiring a crew that he hopes will help him fulfill his son's dream, because Will Taylor doesn't have an idea on how to run a business. He seeks the semi-reluctant assistance of his highly educated non-paid younger sister, Karen, and hires Randal Alexander to run the day-to-day business of the restaurant. Randal is an ex-Infantry Officer who is having trouble adjusting to being out of the service. He had enlisted to fulfill an obligation, left the Army after 8 years, and has to deal with leaving his men behind him. He will soon be supervising an eclectic group of employees.
Tiffany is a quick-witted life survivalist who is not afraid to use her womanly endowment to her advantage but is professional when need be. She quickly adopts her fellow employees as family, and nobody better mess with them. Raymond is a Native American from the reservation who is temporally living with his Aunt. He takes a job at the restaurant and handles the 'ignorance' of those he runs into quite well. Kassie is a high school graduate who doesn't understand how she's supposed to function without communication with the outside world after the employees are told to turn off all personal electronic devices while at work. Rick, Dennis, and Jeff are three stoners, who assume the duties of cook and take on the moniker the Three Pizzarians. They promise to serve high-quality 'food of the gods' to all customers. Karl is a burnt-out ex-dot.com king, who likes working as the night janitor because it gives him time to wrestle with his demons. Joining the group are Will's parents; Cecil and Edna. As Will describes them; his mother is an unintentional bigot and his father is just along for the ride.
The first episode begins one week before the restaurant's grand opening. Will is trying to piece together the dream and make it work; he hires the employees, deals with Randal and his demons, and just prays that his parents don't stay too long. Will has to handle the assorted crisis to include the lettering on his sign not meeting standards, the threat of the loss of his pizza ovens, and a possible alien invasion. Meanwhile, the crew comes together and forms a family-type bond that helps each one struggle with their demons as they try to live the American Dream.
