KICKING TOYS

KICKING TOYS
By Matt Hausmann

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

An addicted man who hears threatening voices in his head from his childhood action figures spins his life out of control when he relapses and seeks rehabilitation.

SYNOPSIS:

Harold, a 36-year-old ordinary guy, celebrates his one year of being sober from his addiction of playing with toys. He receives a one-year sobriety chip from his Toys Anonymous Meetings, and calmly recites his Instructors mantra: “I chose not to use. I chase my dreams and not my toys. Action figures aren’t dope; they can’t help me cope. I’ll be a hero, with a toy zero.”

Suddenly, he starts seeing flickers of himself playing with toys again. The initial fear leads to a voice rising loudly inside Harold’s head, who compulsively recites his mantra many times to try to shut the voice down. Back at home, the voice begs Harold to unearth it when a shovel hanging on his garage wall moves by itself.

Harold struggles with the stubbornness of the voice in his head including pills, booze, and trying to escape from the voice at all costs. The voice is winning when Harold’s sobriety chip is blended to mush, and Harold passes out.

During his sleep, Harold dreams of digging up a rusty, tin container from the ground. Soon, he realizes that this was no dream, and the tin can is in his car’s trunk. He races to the church where he attends Toys Anonymous Meetings, but no one’s there. His desperation with the insisting voice gives in and he opens the tin can revealing toys, including an action figure named Dynamite Jack – the origin of the voice.

Harold plays with the action figures on a dumpster, where he finds a homeless man playing with toys, lost in his own vice. As Harold spirals further into madness, he begins seeing himself as the homeless man. Dirty and lost, he seems to have fully relapsed - that’s when Loretta, his pregnant wife, calls him and he finds a renewed purpose. Harold destroys the Dynamite Jack figure and gathers the remaining figures back into the tin can. Harold goes home where Loretta and himself go through the steps of quitting toys cold turkey. Only through her love and sacrifice can Harold give up toys. In the end, Harold gives the toys a dignified burial and is ready to move on.

Eighteen months later, Harold and Loretta are a happy family with a baby. Behind them, something moves and tries to unearth itself from where Harold buried his toys.
