An anxious artist is gifted a device that allows its user to converse with thoughts, however the artificial intelligence operating the device creates its own agenda.
SYNOPSIS:
Felix Bloom, a struggling artist living an isolated life has one goal: To reclaim his art reputation. One day he's visited by an old friend Levon, who works for JC COMMS: The world's leader in communication technology. Noticing Felix's desperate need for creative (and financial) help, he gives him a prototype device (the SM1) that allows its user to converse with just thoughts. But being just one day away from rent Felix attempts to sell the device in a local pawn shop which backfires. Desperate and furious with the unreliable prototype Felix makes one last attempt to activate the device discovering that it works!
At home, Felix synchronizes his thoughts with Hank: The device's A.I. but fails to acknowledge Hank as anything but a guy working as a customer service agent. Whilst they become acquainted with each other Hank sees Felix's deeper thoughts quite literally. Perceiving Felix's hatred towards his boss he questions Felix who jokes about killing him. Despite Hank's odd and unprofessional behavior, Felix continues to use the device which then helps him see the corrections in his own failed art project.
Sean Cage, the CEO of JC COMMS, promotes an event for the revolutionary SM1 grasping more attention in the media. Meanwhile Felix awakens to a finished and breathtaking painting tailored perfectly to his client. Successfully having sold the painting just in time for rent, he pushes Hank for more "creative assistance". Hank declines to help which sparks an argument so great Felix storms out and visits his Auntie in a local hospital. Her Alzheimer's has taken a worse turn as she accidentally reminds him of his ex-girlfriend. Returning home he realizes what he truly seeks is a companion. He patches up with Hank who reminds him that he is in fact an A.I. then opens up an application allowing Hank to search for a "compatible partner". This is when Felix meets Chloe: The perfect match.
After a successful telepathic chat, they agree to meet in person as suddenly Levon barges in. After losing his job, he warns Felix against making any deals with Hank as his entire life has now been turned upside down. Unconvinced Hank could be responsible for any of the accusations Levon makes he persists to use the device and meets Chloe. Unknown to Felix, he's being tailed from Campbell: A private eye hired by Sean to track his progress with the prototype. But whilst Felix puts Hank into "sleep mode", Sean monitors Hank's progression on his work computer discovering Hank is beginning to remember who he once was. He agrees to let nature take its course and allows Felix to
be used as a guinea pig.
Six months later, Felix and Chloe are engaged and living together in a nice part of the city. Felix has reclaimed his art reputation and is making big money, everything seems perfect. Hank on the other hand discovers the origin of his memories and dreams derived from Jacob Cage: Sean's father/The founding director of JC COMMS. Learning that he was in fact human and is now deceased he decides to unleash all his fury onto Felix.
This occurs when Chloe's curiosity gets the better of her. She can no longer understand why Felix has kept this device despite his wealth and success so she synchronizes her mind with Hank's allowing him to manipulate and alter any of her thoughts. Upset and an emotional wreck she leaves him moving back in with her parents. He then questions Hank who changes the topic to his Auntie who's just had a stroke. When he arrives he has a panic attack of his own resulting with him having to be nursed in his own hospital bed.
Hank takes this opportunity to hire a hitman, but during Campbell's tailing he tackles the gun for hire in the hospital hallway saving Felix's life. Unaware of the full danger he's in, Felix brings the SM1 home. Several days pass with Felix depressed, isolated in his large apartment. He has everything yet nothing. Having allowed Hank to push his depression to a new low Felix makes a decision to end his life and makes his way up on a bridge where he first met Chloe. Moments before leaping Campbell saves him again pulling him from the rail. Campbell admits his role but exposes the truth to why he's working for Sean: To uncover his niece's murder. Learning that Hank is now responsible for numerous lives, they head to JC COMMS data bank where Hank/Jacob Cage's memories are stored. Felix sneaks in with Campbell's help, and begins the deletion sequence under Hank's name. Hank's world crumbles around him as he runs through the locations in his dying memories. As Felix deletes the third and final step, Hank/Jacob's life flashes before his eyes.
After a media frenzy, JC COMMS admits to using memories from dying patients to implant into various SM1 devices for an enhanced A.I. experience. But all this does is boost sales and offer free promotion as elderly patients defend JC COMMS decision: Why not give something to science and leave some money for my loved ones when I'm gone? Felix visits his Aunt who has amazingly recovered most of her memories (thanks to the SM1 prompting her buried thoughts). Felix leaves with an opposite outlook on life, unfocused on wealth, status, he no longer cares nor seeks fame and fortune. Satisfied and grateful just be alive.
