HOW AN ARTIST IS BORN
By Tocha Alves

GENRE: Documentary
LOGLINE:

A documentary filmmaker has been accompanying Ayris, who among admirers and dislikes continues firmly believe in his obsessive quest to find patrons and realize his dream of becoming a successful artist, for more than a decade.

SYNOPSIS:

The documentary "How an Artist Is Born" examines the journey of Airys, an eccentric Brazilian artist who seeks success and fame while dealing with various psychological disorders that end is reflected in his works. In his obsessive search for his place in the contemporary art market, he has built a unique and original narrative.

It's all part of a real idea: he made a conscious decision that his destiny was to become a recognized and successful artist. Since then, he has pursued this prophecy beginning to mediate in all directions of his life, countless people in his conscious predicament, and mainly investors.

Among them, Tocha Alves, the director of this documentary, however, stands out. Somehow seduced by Airys' obsession, perhaps by identifying with him, Torch devoted years of his life recording Airys’ life, and inevitably, created a certain bond of intimacy with him.

"How an artist is born" is a film hostage of this relationship between the two.

From the moment Torch was willing to record Ayris' footsteps, respecting his primal desire to triumph in art, the Airys saw a relationship with the camera and the director, a kind of validation of his "madness", as the documentary filmmaker's genuine interest strengthened his life project. And it all started with a bariatric surgery in which Airys' own body would be an artistic result.

We can see that Airys sees himself as a kind of self-work in progress. Perhaps it is only the fruit of our times. A caricature of the tireless artist who desires recognition, perhaps representing something so pioneering that we still do not have the capacity to access its symbolic universe. Maybe it's all a big theater. Who knows? All this does not influence the wandering trajectory of Airys, which resulted in a past between luxury and an extensive collection of distant friends.

Torch was present at some critical moments in Airys' life, an observer to the actions and reactions of this real-life character in unconventional situations. There have been several meetings over the last 15 years that have yielded many hours of material that swings between glory and embarrassment. What was the common denominator of these times? Airys' certainty that he's about to accomplish something grand that will mean a starry future... Or not.

The story comes together between Torch's intentions and his filming equipment and Airys' ability to embody the obsessive artist, determined and full that he is on the right track in his life.

Interviews related to the questions brought on by the history dealing with: gallerists, collectors, curators, artists, art teachers and psychologists; explore the controversies and contradictions that cross the artistic trajectory, deepening and questioning the means used by Airys in this journey, full of disappointments, attempts to take shortcuts to success, disaffections, friends and former friends.

The only permanent element throughout so many onslaughts, meetings with coaches and patrons, is the insistent documentary filmmaker who gradually, found himself surrounded by countless hours of material about his character. There were 15 years of recordings accompanying key moments of the main character, this generated 65% of the film. The other 35% comes from interviews with people linked to art, estranged friends people, friends and mental illness specialists. That will still be filmed. As well as the first Airys exhibition to take place in September 2022.

From the depth of this rich archive produced by Torch, the film reveals the dimension of Airys' trajectory, showing the human issues that orbit his personal narrative while navigating the human feelings that overflow at all times: obsession, desire, frustration and the strokes of luck and bad luck that life holds for us, are among the tendons that dictate the rhythm life.

Airys then assumes the role of a great representative of what it means to live outside of what is considered normal and produce art from that starting point, bringing up the importance of the artist in today's world.
