Coffee & Content: Do You Know Why Most People Quit Before They Succeed?

Happy Sunday, Creative Army!

Have you had a creative weekend so far? Whether you’ve been writing, filming, editing, or simply dreaming up your next big idea, I’ve got some inspiring content to fuel your passion and keep you moving forward. So grab your coffee, and let’s dive in.

This video essay from Film Stack dives into the fascinating career of GARY OLDMAN, an absolute master of transformation. He’s played everything from Dracula to Churchill, Beethoven to Sirius Black. But there was a time when being too good at playing villains almost derailed his career. Oldman was Hollywood’s go-to bad guy, but that typecasting eventually became a cage. It wasn’t until two major franchises: Harry Potter (as Sirius Black) and The Dark Knight (as Jim Gordon) came along that he broke free from that box and reinvented his career.

This video is a must-watch for any actor or storyteller who wants to understand the power of perception in the industry and why your career isn’t just about talent.

I say this all the time, and I’ll say it again here, if you want to make a real career in this industry, you have to learn the business. It doesn’t matter if you’re a filmmaker, actor, writer, editor, or anything in between, the most common reason people hit a wall or quit is because they focus 100% on craft and ignore the business side of the industry.

If you don’t understand how the industry works, you’re getting in your own way. Learn how managers and agents operate. Understand how production roles collaborate to bring a project to life. Know how casting directors think. Communicate effectively with editors, VFX teams, composers, and art departments. Learn the language of the business and it will separate you from the pack. This is a people business. This is a relationships business. And this is a business where knowledge of how things work gives you power and longevity. Learn more in my video here.

What’s one thing about the business side of the industry you want to learn more about this year? Drop it in the comments and let’s talk about it!

What a fun video—I love Gary Oldman, but I didn’t know all of that about him. Thanks for sharing that! I want to learn how to build a passive income, especially through sync licensing and digital rights, that’s soul-aligned with what I do—helping creatives find balance without burnout. I’m also figuring out how to build genuine connections in a space that can feel a little closed off sometimes. Hope you're having a great week!

You're most welcome, Kat Spencer. As to your second point (and mission), it's a process and a long game. Narrow your targets, be your authentic self and work at it every day.

Thanks for writing this, RB. I’ve taken a couple of certification courses this year and enjoyed them. It’s good to learn the language of business! My wife and I just watched Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy last night and Gary Oldman gives a masterclass in understatement. Mind you, the rest of the cast, including Tom Hardy were amazing. Have a great weekend.

I’ve always loved how Gary Oldman could “reinvent himself” in every performance. He doesn’t rest on the past. He moves on, especially after his many “over-the-top” characters. As a screenwriter, I’m still learning to “move past” my last script to “move on” to the next one. Unlike Gary Oldman who has to leave only one character behind, as a screenwriter, I have to leave all my, hopefully unforgettable, characters behind and come up with many new memorable characters in the next script. It is our job to reinvent ourselves. As Oldman’s character, Winston Churchill, said, “Never give in!” And RB is right about balancing the creative and business side. I need to spend more time on my business. Thanks for posting, RB.

Thanks for this RB. Makes total sense that you have to combine craft with knowledge of and experience of the business of film-making. I have a lot to learn

It’s really great to be able to have a way to connect with the industry even when a typical “no” is attached to it! That’s much farther than some people get. It has definitely leveled the playing field and makes it worthwhile to keep trying and learning. Thanks for all that you and the team at Stage 32 do!

Good morning, RB. Hope you’re having a great weekend! I've been resting this weekend. I rewrote two short scripts, did some work on a feature script rewrite, thought of ideas for a feature I'm outlining, and networked last week. Gary Oldman is a phenomenal actor! He's one of my favorite actors. It’s incredible how he can jump back and forth between villain roles and other roles. I used to just focus on the screenwriting side of the industry when I became a screenwriter, but I'm focused on both sides now, and it's like night and day with my career. I want to learn more about distribution this year.

You're right, RB. And I've been thinking about making an audio drama, graphic novel, and comic. Knowing more about distribution will help with that.

Gary Oldman is one of my inspirations, and I am grateful you shared with us, RB. I firmly believe that understanding the business side is essential for success. That's crucial for any industry. I know how the trade business works because I've been in it my whole life. What I am trying to learn is how the filmmaking industry business works, and that's my greatest challenge. For now, I am diving into producing and directing my own short film. I have to put my hands on it! From the business perspective, I believe that negotiations, networking, and diplomacy are similar to the trade business, but I am eager to dive into it in real life. Thank you for being an inspiration and guide for all of us!

Agree 1,000% RB. It’s the reason I got into voice acting and took every class I could on producing. And besides, I find what others do fascinating and I’m able to engage in discussions about areas outside of writing.

Gary Oldman is one of the greats -- I've been a fan of his work since the beginning. And his appearance on "Friends" is one of the funniest and most memorable episodes of that series. And I agree that getting to play Sirius Black in Harry Potter redefined his image with an entirely new generation.

This is such a crucial reminder, RB. It’s so easy to focus only on the craft because that’s where the passion lives, but if you don’t understand how to navigate the business side, you end up creating in a vacuum. Knowing how to talk to collaborators, pitch your project, and build relationships is just as important as a killer script or a strong reel. Thanks for always keeping us grounded in both sides of the journey.
