Coffee & Content: Let’s Talk About Where You’re Spending Your Time

Happy Sunday, Creative Army!

Let’s kick things off with a huge shoutout to everyone who has already jumped into this month’s Introduce Yourself Weekend. Thousands of creatives from around the world are connecting, sharing their stories, and building relationships that will lead to collaborations, opportunities, and lifelong friendships. If you haven’t yet made your introduction, you’ve still got time! Head over to the Introduce Yourself Lounge and say hello before the weekend wraps. Be bold. Introduce yourself. The next great opportunity could be one connection away.

With Cannes right around the corner and so many of you preparing to pitch, present, or promote, there’s never been a better time to master the art of marketing, not just your film, but yourself.

In this breakdown from Studio Binder, you’ll get a deep dive into the mechanics of modern film marketing from old-school trailers and press junkets to today’s digital-first strategies including social media campaigns, micro-targeted ads, street team activations, and viral video content. Understanding the marketing machine isn’t just about getting butts in seats or views on your trailer. It’s about creating a conversation around your project. It’s about building a world your audience wants to step into and giving buyers, reps, and collaborators a reason to believe in what you’re making. If you’re looking to sell your film, get your script optioned, or build long-term momentum in your career, this is the kind of foundational knowledge that gives you the edge.

In the age of content overload, it’s easy to confuse being online with being productive. There’s a massive difference between aimlessly scrolling and intentionally engaging with platforms and communities that move you toward your goals. In this video, I talk about how to be strategic with your online presence and how to use your time on platforms like Stage 32 to fuel your growth instead of distract from it.

Let me ask you: Are you showing up online in a way that reflects your creative vision and the goals you’ve set for yourself? Are you surrounding yourself with people who inspire action? Or are you stuck in the echo chamber of passive scrolling? Let’s talk about it in the comments! No judgment. Just real conversation.

As always, here at Stage 32, we love to share stories and knowledge with our fellow film fans. Know someone who would love this content? Share it with them! Tag them below! I missed Coffee and Content on Sunday for the first time in years while I finished a script for a producer on a time crunch. Things happen. This was a golden opportunity I couldn't say no. I finally got to Coffee and Content. I liked the clip on the many aspects of film marketing. Most were new to me, and I like learning things that may be useful down the road. I loved RBs advice about how we choose to spend our time. I, too, strategically use social media in hopes of getting more time to write. Thanks for posting, RB.

Thank you RB for the illuminating video on marketing a movie. It is a new subject for me and it was great to expand my knowledge. I also found it helpful for thinking about marketing in general. I mistakenly sometimes have the point of view that if something is really good, it shouldn't need much marketing. Or if a film is from a big studio and/or has well-known actors that it doesn't need much marketing. That seems naieve now as from watching the video I recognised that however big or good or great something is, it still needs a lot of marketing. So thank you. And yet, totally subscribe to what you say about putting boundaries on who you subscribe to on social media. Life is too short to waste on stuff that is not nourishing me or helping me to develop in some way.

Love the point that it's important to be productive on social media. I used to watch just any video on youtube to pass the time in the evenings. Now I think, are these videos bringing any value or inspire me to be the best artist I can be and what can I learn from them?

Thanks for sharing this, RB! Marketing is so important -- even during the production/post process, social media posts timed right can help keep interest going. Though it's a challenge when you're doing post and the marketing yourself.

Happens to everyone, Matteo Sambrone. Sometimes it's hard not to get caught up in it all. But the way out, as you've concluded, is to take action. We have more power in our hands just by virtue of our choices than we give ourselves credit for. Here's to breaking out and leveling up.

Hi RB! You bring amazing advices for us as always! I am a marketeer by nature, so it is easy for me because what I show with my scripts, goals, and mission is always linked with me. That's who I am! But, of course, the more skills I learn, the better I will be, and the more I can help others connect and evolve! Regarding Cannes, I am unsure if I will attend this year. The chance to meet everyone and network would be great, but I'm not sure yet. Meanwhile, I am doing my best virtually. The people around me serve as my mirror, and I learn from them, especially my Stage 32 family. And you are one of them, RB! I am grateful to you. Xx

Hey, RB. Hope you’re having a great weekend! I’m having a fun time at Introduce Yourself Weekend. I’m catching up with friends and connecting with members. Fantastic videos! Thanks for sharing. I use some of the things mentioned in the Studio Binder video for my scripts, like posters. You said in the blog, “It’s about building a world your audience wants to step into.” You’re right. If I see a trailer, promo ad, etc. and I feel like stepping into a story world and spending time there, I’m watching the movie/show/etc. The same thing when I’m scrolling through streaming services for something to watch. You also said in the blog, “In the age of content overload, it’s easy to confuse being online with being productive.” I’m mainly on social media to be productive (pitch, learn, etc.), but sometimes I catch myself just “being on social media,” meaning just scrolling and watching things. When I catch myself doing those things, I’ll get off media and find something to work on or jump into a productive conversation.

You're right, RB. I try to only stay connected with the entertainment community and Horror community on Twitter/X (which ties into me staying connected with the entertainment community), so that's what I mainly see on my feed.

Absolutely agree that broad based SM has become an echo chamber which is why I rarely use it. I think it's important to be surrounded by mindsets that are going to move you forward either on a personal level or professionally. Even if that person has reached a level that is light-years beyond where I am, it's more important to me that they be real and authentic but positive as well - looking for solutions and not reasons to quit. It's also important to be authentic and genuine with the folks you're surrounded by. What comes into your mind is what becomes our reality.

I think I am stuck in the middle. I do passively observe and scroll, while also trying to engage. I am aware that I have to get out more and be more active than I already am. But I am working on that.

This business is all about connections and being seen, Lucy Addams, and engagement is a huge part of that process. But there needs to be a focus as well. Too many choose quantity over quantity and that leads to a dilution of qualified voices and pertinent information.
