Happy Sunday, Creative Army!

Have you had a creative weekend so far? I have some content here for you that is sure to get the creative juices flowing, so grab your coffee, and let's dive in.

For years, Matthew McConaughey was the ultimate rom-com star. If you needed a leading man with charm, a mischievous grin, and an easygoing Southern drawl, he was your guy. But then, something changed. In this video essay from FilmStack, they’re exploring McConaughey’s professional reinvention, also known as “The McConaissance”. McConaughey took a massive risk, he turned down the easy paychecks and stepped away from the roles that made him a household name. Instead, he pursued transformative, deeply layered performances in Dallas Buyers Club, Interstellar, and True Detective. The result? One of the greatest career reinventions Hollywood has ever seen, and an Oscar to show for it. But why did he take the risk? How did he execute his transformation so flawlessly?

The biggest lesson here? Reinvention isn’t just for actors. Writers, directors, producers- every creative professional will, at some point, face the choice of staying in their lane or evolving. The ones who take the risk and push themselves outside their comfort zone? Those are the ones who build lasting, dynamic careers.

Every day, I get the same question from new members of Stage 32: “How do I get jobs, get my script read, land financing, find a manager, or get an agent?”

My answer has never changed: treat networking and relationship-building like a job, because it is 50% of your job. This is a relationship business. The most tribal of them all. People want to work with people they know, they trust, and that come recommended by trusted sources. That applies whether you’re an actor, filmmaker, producer, cinematographer, composer, crew member, or anyone in between. If you want to succeed in this industry, networking isn’t optional, it’s essential. Learn more in this video.

So how can you start TODAY? Stage 32 has officially relaunched its Invite System, making it easier than ever to bring new creatives into our community. I'm asking every Stage 32 member to invite at least five fellow creatives, and I would love for you to lead the charge! The bigger the network, the greater the opportunities.

This is awesome! I loved his roles in "Contact", "Interstellar" and one of his older movies "Angels In The Outfield"! His romcoms are good, but I like his dramatic movie roles more! I think it's great when actors play a range of roles. I have a question about sending invites. I tried sending an invite to my friend via email, but he had trouble joining and then lost the email and stage32 won't allow me to send duplicate invites. Are there other ways I can invite friends to stage32, like through facebook?

Fantastic and fundamental advice as well! Throughout one's career, the relationships built over time will be the cornerstone of success. A magical transition occurs from a personal connection, face-to-face interaction, or otherwise connectivity. The opportunities now are endless, only limited by a lack of a positive, outgoing, inquisitive, and supportive, passionate drive. Determination is the lesson here, thank you @RB!

Truly well said, Jack Binder. Couldn't agree more. Relationships build over time and, as you said, are the cornerstone of success and longevity in this industry.

Great post, RB! Thank you for sharing! If anyone is interested: McConaughey’s memoir GREENLIGHTS is a great read. I’ve also been listening to comedians’ memoirs (Molly Shannon, Ali Wong, et al.) on audio lately, and it’s really inspiring to hear how they hustled and pivoted, but mostly showed up, put in the hard work, and were ready/prepared when “luck” arrived.

I've heard nothing but raves about his book, Erin Leigh. Appreciate you reminding me. I'll have to push it up the list.  And it's amazing how luck only shows up for those who put in the work, exercise discipline and are home when opportunity knocks, no? Thanks for commenting!

A bit late to the pary but thanks @Richard RB for writing this and sharing the video. I agree with others that it takes a huge amount of guts to do a career pivot like that. He symbolises for me how important it is to trust your instincts, even when staring into a void (2 years for him). Just as us actors are always told to trust our instincts, he did and it paid off. Amazing range, depth and committment. I need to go watch Interstellar and Dallas Buyers. Thank you for the reminder abotu networking. It’s never been easier and more productive to do than on Stage 32 :)

Never too late, Alexandra Stevens. I appreciate you taking the time! I think the big takeaway with Matthew is he, as you said, trusted his instincts. Sometimes you have to swim against the tide and bet on yourself, especially when people are trying to put you in a box. Also thrilled to hear you're finding the networking here to be productive and smooth. We're just providing the tools, you're doing all the heavy lifting and building.

Re-invention with current industrial affairs, is certainly going to be of crucial key matters RB! Recently made a comment about Mathew McConaughey's role in Interstellar. The scientific theme in storyline indeed captivated a new interest in audiences and generally. Thankful seeing this blog!

This is great -- as an actor, it's always good to first find your niche to put yourself on the map, then you can show your range. I think the current climate is more favorable for actors getting to show range, especially with all of the indie production out there. If you have a script you're looking to produce, this is the perfect time to go after name actors who don't get a chance to play the role you might be offering. We actors love creating great characters and don't always get the opportunity.

I love the thinking behind reinventing yourself and relationships, RB. One of my biggest heart’s desires is t work with a group of people that I enjoy hanging out with and not just make me a better writer but encourage me to expand outside of my lane which is what I’m building now with voiceover acting. Thankful for my tribe!

Good morning, RB. I've been networking this weekend, and I came up with a short script idea that I'm outlining today. It's an exciting idea that can be made really cheap. It's a spin on a popular sub-genre. Matthew McConaughey’s reinvention is incredible! He’s fantastic in Rom-Coms, but he really shines in the dramatic roles, just look at Interstellar. You said, "The biggest lesson here? Reinvention isn’t just for actors. Writers, directors, producers- every creative professional will, at some point, face the choice of staying in their lane or evolving. The ones who take the risk and push themselves outside their comfort zone?" You're right. I've been writing more Comedy and scripts mixed with Comedy. Comedy is something I used to avoid because I thought it was too hard. Will I make the complete switch to Comedy? Who knows. You also said, "My answer has never changed: treat networking and relationship-building like a job, because it is 50% of your job. This is a relationship business." Exactly. I used to treat networking as an afterthought, and I didn't meet nearly as many people or get nearly as many opportunities as I do now. I do most of my networking on Stage 32. And networking gets easier the more someone does it. Stage 32's Invite System is a great tool! I used it to send invites on social media. I'm making an email list of people to send invites to as well.

Thanks, RB. You're right about progress in all pursuits comes down to mindset. My mindset about a lot of things in the industry is way different than my mindset when I started writing scripts. One thing that changed my mindset is the supportive, encouraging, knowledgeable community on Stage 32.

Reinvention is my word, and challenge is my life! Sometimes I ask myself why, when I accomplish new stages in my life, I don't stay there and relax! The same answer always comes: "You came to this life to expand your awareness and find the answers to new truths, wisdom, and evolution." But I am a good student :)) Thank you for sharing, RB! As always, you bring deep themes that allow us to think and evolve. One of my favorite actors, Matthew McConaughey, has undergone a remarkable reinvention as a result of his introspective self-discovery. Building our relationships is crucial for securing future opportunities; providing opportunities for others and fostering their growth will also benefit us. We are the foundation for achieving success! Let's achieve 1.500,000 members! I believe we can do it! Have an amazing week, RB and keep pushing us to be better and better.

Actor, Director, Music Composer, Musician, Producer
Good morning amico! As usual you've hit the nail on the head and I respect Matthew McConaughey for his bravery and turning down big checks to explore his art. My managers and agents all think I'm nuts to quit music while I'm on top of my music career but I did it on purpose. Of course the pandemic changed everything and set me back hugely with half a million lost from canceled tours. So reinvented my strategy and studied lots of stuff, lots of it right here on the Stage32 platform for which I am forever grateful paisan. This right here is a great example of how you run, hands down, the best one of a kind film and television industry platforms. Much respect

I loved Matthew McConaughey’s commitment to his reinvention. He chose roles the way I try to write each new script: “with more range, more depth, and more confidence.” That’s a lesson for the ages! We all could use a “McConaissance” every day. On networking: I network every day. That’s the best thing I’ve learned from RB and the Stage 32 community. There is only an “upside” when we network.

I probably receive 15-20 (zero exaggeration) pieces of correspondence a week from people asking how they get to a certain executive, how they can find a shorter path to success, how they can get read, raise financing, find a producer, get more acting roles, etc. I ask the same thing every time - "How much time did you spend networking and building relationships the last 7 days?" The answer is almost always zero. The biggest competitive advantage you can give yourself is working this site every day. I know you get that, Tom Stohlgren. And you've reaped the rewards.
