On Writing : Contact info for Producers, actors, etc. by Carol Tanis

Contact info for Producers, actors, etc.

My script is finally done and I’m learning that getting current contact information for producers, actors, etc. is nearly impossible unless you subscribe to services like IMDb or contactanycelebrity.com. Is this money well spent? Thanks.

Richard Buzzell

In my experience - not money well spent. YMMV.

Carol Tanis

Good to know. Thank you.

And of course there is the tragically named WhoRepresents.com (use all lower case and you'll see why). I am on IMDBPro and subscribe. I got my contacts for my short film from both IMDBPro and WhoRepresents - so I can doublecheck the info, and both were wrong anyway. So warning - accuracy fails a lot. Luckily for me, the ex-manager for one of the actresses got me the information for the new manager and that went well. One of the adages I follow is if you can do it at home or you can do it by going out somewhere, always go out - you never know what you find or who you meet :)

Such as: "At 19, Charlize Theron moved to Los Angeles, California on a one-way ticket her mother bought her, in hopes she would make it in the film industry. During her early months there, she went to a Hollywood Boulevard bank to cash a check her mother had sent her to help with the rent. When the bank teller refused to cash it, Theron starting shouting with him. Upon seeing this, talent agent John Crosby, in line behind her, handed her his business card and subsequently introduced her to casting agents and also an acting school." (Don't know if links work here but that's from : https://www.projectcasting.com/news/charlize-theron-discovered/)

Actual, in-person networking is really the best way. Find film sets and volunteer to be a PA. Work hard, be professional, give more than take. People in the biz respond well to this - they'll remember you for the next gig. Build from there. This biz isn't a sprint of throwing your stuff at people, it's a marathon of relationship-building.

Carol Tanis

Richard and John, thank you for the good information. I appreciate your time. Yes, I'm learning "it's a marathon of relationship-building." Thankfully, I enjoy the learning part too, but it's not quite as fun as writing. Yet, with your help, I'm learning to be creative in my search to sell. Best wishes.

Have any you used FilmFreeway? Seems too good to be true. Submit your script to contests for free. Hmmm.

Gustavo Freitas

About FilmFreeway, you still pay the contest’s entry fee.

Carol Tanis

Thank you Gustavo. I guess I didn't dig deep enough into the website. Have a great day knowing you've been a help to another person.

IMDb Pro is totally worth the price of admission. You also have ahem Stage 32. Just sayin'...
