A Nod to the 80's

As tools continue to develop and technology advances with high resolution, motion capture, and powerful post processing. Some are using these tools to go back to the old school aesthetic of the 80's animation style. If your familiar with blender3d then you know how versatile that software can be, if your not then this may surprise you.

Have you watched anything from the 80's recently and wondered how you could recreate that style or look?

Maurice Vaughan

That's pretty cool, Daniel Husbands! I think "Thundercats" would look great with this style.

Sydney Summers

Ahhhh I love the 80's throwback, brings me nostalgia!

Mike Boas

An interesting approach, although I think a more convincing result could have been achieved by just drawing traditionally. 3D gives a dimensionality and parallax that’s hard to hide.

Some of his explanations of classic animation (of aspect ratio, grain, and resolution) certainly made me feel old! I guess he’s explaining to kids.

A fun thing to compare is the 90s X-Men cartoon to the new episodes of X-Men 97, both on Disney Plus. The new X-Men 97 does a great job of replicating the FEEL of the old show without actually being as low quality.

Sam Sokolow

This is cool, Daniel Husbands - would like see Inspector Gadget redone in this style.

Inspector Gadget was one of my favorites

Ashley Renee Smith

This is awesome, Daniel Husbands! I haven't watched many '80s cartoons lately, but I recently did a '90s Animated Spider-Man rewatch. I love that show so much!

Bob Harper

Ah, the 80's. It's amazing how some half-hour toy commercials were able to have a enough teeth to be decent and have a legacy of nostalgia.

Leonardo Ramirez

That's cool. Wouldn't mind seeing Voltron in that style.
