By Simon Wilkinson

LOGLINE:

When a nature-phobic Sydney lawyer finds herself stranded in the Australian outback with an orphaned baby kangaroo, she turns to an antisocial bushwacker for help. As they nurture the joey together, their mutual loathing turns to love, but nature and society conspire to keep them apart.

SYNOPSIS:

KATE PATTERSON is an intelligent and successful Sydney Lawyer who loves modern city life.

Sent to the Northern Territory to negotiate a lucrative land deal, she anticipates a trouble-free trip – but things go wrong from the moment she boards her flight at Sydney Airport.

Delayed, diverted and desperately late, she finds herself driving at warp speed along a lonely outback highway in the middle of the night – straight into the path of a red kangaroo.

With her car totalled and her mobile phone smashed, Kate is stranded in the Never Never with the orphaned joey from the pouch of the dead roo.

Eager to offload the joey, she pitches up on the doorstep of local “piker” BEN ADAMS.

Ben loves animals and hates people. He has created a ninety acre reserve where he can care for thirty orphaned kangaroos. In this sanctuary, Ben doesn’t have to worry about human contact. He can do whatever he wants, when he wants and he answers to no-one.

That all changes when Kate takes-up temporary residence in his outbuilding whilst her car is fixed.

Kate is impulsive – a creature of instinct, but snakes, spiders, mice – they all scare the B’ Jesus out of her (much to Ben’s amusement). Gradually Kate learns to see the beauty in the abundant wildlife which thrives in Ben’s little world.

Ben’s outlook on life is child-like in its simplicity. The thought of having to be civilized scares the B’ Jesus out of him (much to Kate’s annoyance). Gradually Ben realises that no man is an island and that maybe it is time for him to re-join the real world.

With the help of no-nonsense neighbour, BRENDA TOOTLE, they finally begin to see that they are two halves of the same whole. Nature and humanity do not always have to be in conflict and beautiful things can happen when they work together.

Unfortunately Mother Nature and Kate’s past city life conspire to tear Kate and Ben apart.

A bushfire destroys the reserve and Ben is forced to turn all the kangaroos loose. If this was not enough, Ben is dragged-off to the city when he is arrested on spurious charges and Kate is left behind in the outback to try and rescue everything that Ben has worked so hard to achieve.

Ben is looking at a lengthy prison sentence and is led to believe that Kate is directly responsible for the seizure of his sanctuary so that a gas company can frack the land - all of which she withheld from him. Ben feels utterly betrayed by Kate and refuses to talk to her.

Without Ben’s knowledge, Kate manages to get Ben’s charges reduced and also secures a High Court injunction to protect the land and stop the drilling.

On her death bed, Brenda tells Ben the truth about everything Kate has done on his behalf.

Ben now sets out to win Kate back. When Kate sees how truly sorry Ben is for being such a jerk, she forgives him.

Kate and Ben live happily ever after – rescuing animals. Their reserve becomes a thriving tourist attraction and world class Outback Education Centre – dedicated to the memory of Brenda.

The final image sees a pregnant Kate releasing the now adult Joey into the wilds of the outback.
