SYNOPSIS:

In 1914 Ireland finds herself on the brink. The country's desire for independence collides with the outbreak of the Great War and young Irish men throughout the land are forced to choose sides. In a little country village, two brothers go to war for their beliefs - one to fight against tyranny in the fields of France, the other to fight against tyranny at home against the British. Eamonn and Christy Geraghty are both are Irish patriots, yet they believe in very different ways to secure Irish independence. Their singular philosophies will lead them down very different paths as Europe, and Ireland in particular, tear themselves apart. Christy volunteers for War service with the British Army and is posted to France with the Irish Guards. He proves himself in battle, is wounded and returns home to witness the events of Easter 1916, just as Eamonn’s fight begins. The disastrous consequences of the failed Easter Uprising force the brothers onto opposite sides as Eamonn begins to consider his brother a traitor. Christy finds a sense of purpose he could never have imagined before enlisting - a purpose which transcends race and religion. He places his loyalty to his comrades before his loyalty to Ireland and returns to France to continue fighting. Christy makes the ultimate sacrifice as he lays down his life for freedom and honour on the battlefields of France. With the Geraghty family blaming the British for Christy’s death, Eamonn throws himself into the armed struggle until Ireland is finally free from British control. Whilst fighting against savage and ill-disciplined forces acting outside the Law, Eamonn witnesses shocking crimes committed by both sides in the conflict. Finally, with the signing of the Anglo Irish Treaty in 1921, Eamonn can begin to look to the future with his new wife, Annie. Based on real life people and events, this moving and authentic drama charts significant moments along the road to Irish independence. Many of these crucial events were turning-points in the conflict, yet they are little-known today.
