GENRE: Thriller, Horror
LOGLINE:

An American exorcist and a chain-smoking former nun, one of the world’s leading experts on symbols, combine to find a tool to head off the apocalypse. But even as they confront in a Cathedral the most powerful demon ever encountered - they unravel a deep family secret.

SYNOPSIS:

Hugh O’Donnell is a man aware from his first days in a seminary that he is destined for a showdown with Satan. And because of that, struggles with his feelings for a young woman, while he is training in Rome to become a priest and an exorcist.

Decades later, in Washington, D.C. Pope Romain gathers together representatives of the world’s major religions to announce that a prophecy is about to come true.

After centuries trapped on earth Satan is now in the final days and is about to launch an all-out attack on humanity, to become absolute ruler.

Now a Cardinal, Hugh O’Donnell will return to his role as an exorcist to co-ordinate the battle against him – since Satan has already, for reasons not yet revealed, identified him as his biggest threat.

Satan makes his intentions clear when a member of the Swiss Guard is possessed and attacks the Pope in front of the assembled clerics.

The message is clear: apocalypse is near. Chaos is already starting, with earthquakes and hurricane clusters threatening to wipe out all mankind.

Satan sends messages to O’Donnell who he hopes to cajole into ruling his satanic kingdom. The video contains a painting inspired by Francis Thompson’s mystical poem, The Hound of Heaven. To unlock the secret symbols in the artwork O’Donnell teams up with Mary an expert on symbology.

As they continue to search for clues in the paintings Satan tries a different tactic. His two demons Bernael and Babalon kidnap O’Donnell’s mother and hold her for ransom. In return for his mother’s life

Satan asks O’Donnell to join his demonic kingdom as a kind of anti-pope. But O’Donnell refuses.

Catherine is skeptical about the paintings. She thinks it is a ruse to cover up the real threat – and knows she is right when she discovers a link between O’Donnell’s ancient family, a cross symbol on one of the paintings, and the scar on O’Donnell’s hand. Their focus switches to locating a druidic wand.

An artificial intelligence called CODICE is able to search the Vatican’s vast Secret Archives for references to the druidic wand. The AI locates the wand in a Washington, D.C. zoo. The wand was hidden in Washington to prevent Hitler from securing its powers and making the Nazis unstoppable.

O’Donnell and Catherine trace the wand to the enclosure of a Cassowary—a large flightless bird with claws like a Velociraptor. The zookeeper sedates the bird so they can dig it up but the cassowary wakes and almost kills Mary and O’Donnell but they manage to escape with the wand.

Armed with the druid wand O’Donnell is ready for the final showdown

with Satan at Washington’s Basilica. Using blessed holy water O’Donnell is able to destroy a number of minor demons then Satan himself shows up with O’Donnell’s mother.

To make a big point: he revels in the revelation made to O’Donnell and Catherine only a day before that they are brother and sister, the result of the mother’s infidelity – her quadriplegia caused when their father attempted to murder-suicide them both, when he discovered her betrayal.

O’Donnell’s attempts to thwart Satan with Christian invocations and appeals to the crucifix but they are powerless to save his mother who is bleeding to death. When O’Donnell recites lines from the mystical poem, The Hound of Heaven he is able to conjure a protective wall of wind around her that Satan can’t penetrate.

When Satan attempts to crucify both of them on an upside cross the wand comes to the rescue.

As Satan loses each segment of the battle he shape shifts downwards, from strong and arrogant to weak and repulsive.

An incantation in Gaelic emits from the wand. By combining the Gaelic incantation with his own religion’s symbols O’Donnell is able to overpower Satan who suddenly disappears... the world appears to be safe.

In the days following O’Donnell tracks down and meets the woman he’d fallen for back when he was a seminarian. The first time they’d met in decades. She is happily married with two grown up children, and after a revealing lunch they part good friends.

After Romain’s death O’Donnell is made Pope. With his mother and Mary in the front row O’Donnell celebrates The Hound of Heaven from this Papal Balcony. The man Catherine describes as The Last Druid has won.
