Coffee & Content: Screenwriting Advice from KNIVE'S OUT's Rian Johnson & Hans Zimmer on DUNE Film Score

Happy Sunday Creative Army!

Have you had a creative weekend so far? I have some content here for you that is sure to get the creative juices flowing, so grab your coffee and let's dive in.

First up, Behind the Curtain has a great interview with Rian Johnson (Knives Out, Star Wars: Episode VIII, Looper) about his writing process for Knives Out. Specifically, Rian talks about how he approached writing a modern whodunit, his experience as a writer/director, and more. Spoiler alert: if you haven't seen Knives Out yet, this video does include spoilers.

Next up, Duneinfo recently shared a fascinating behind the scenes look at the making of the Dune score. This video features interviews with Dune composer Hans Zimmer (Inception, Dunkirk, No Time to Die, Wonder Woman 1984) and director Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner2049, Arrival, Sicario). They talk about the inspiration for the sounds of the film, the process of adapting a book to a film, and more.

I really enjoyed following Rian Johnson's process on "Knives Out".  It gave me some ideas of how I can approach my own writing.  Thanks for sharing, RB!

I have enjoyed "Coffee and Content" every week, but today I was overwhelmed. "Behind the Curtain" with Rian Johnson taught me more about storytelling in 12 minutes than I have learned in a lifetime of watching murder mysteries and suspense films. He handed us useful tools, building blocks, and architectural design in simple terms. I understand what makes him the best. Thanks for posting, RB.

Knives Out is possibly the greatest "who done it" ever made... even though you know "who done it" almost from scene 1. To add too, I love this breakdown from Studiobinder. https://youtu.be/zQ1Feczm93A

So true! The score of “Dune” is amazing! Original, emotional and kind of experimental. Enjoyed the movie a lot. Filter coffee, latte or cafe au lait? We’ll see! Thanks for sharing and have a fresh Sunday!
