The Most Important Rules for Animating

I've found StudioBinder to be really good a breaking down all sorts of things. Here is some animation principles that every animator should know. If you've got any other principles that you think that might be a good add to this list please feel free to share with the community.

Fantastic share, Daniel Husbands! I didn't know small details were so important in Animation, like "Squash and Stretch."

Terence Daniels

Yeah, thanks for posting this it's always important to know the principles. I've actually been looking at a lot of anime to encapsulate some of the techniques involved in some way since I am not involved with the studios. I think I'll make another post with some of the videos I made concerning certain topics. Are you heavily involved with osmosifying you use of the techniques in your practice r/n?

Daniel Husbands

Currently, I'm keeping my eye on physics based animation tools which help to add some of those principles, but I'm not working on animation in the traditional sense right now. Later this year I will need to get more heavily into it, but not for a while. I really appreciate all the research that went in to developing these principles, solid stuff.

Amanda Toney

thank you for posting this Daniel. I agree, they do a terrific job with breaking things down. It’s a great resource.

Mike Boas

I consistently teach these principles to my students. my favorite explainer videos on the subject are by Alan Becker.

Love this video, Daniel Husbands! Thank you for sharing!

Bob Harper

Thanks for sharing. The twelve principles are always desirable; however, when it comes to short deadlines and high quotas, the inside joke is that we can only afford three!

Mike Boas

Fast, good, or cheap. Pick two!

Daniel Husbands

Which principle can you get away with the most Bob Harper ?

Bob Harper

Daniel Husbands It depends on the project, the deadline and the goal of the project, but usually the three we can use and get away with and still make a project watchable are easing, arcs and timing.

Mike Boas

Many are just baked into the process. Pose-to-pose is HOW to animate. Staging is HOW to communicate clearly.

That said, I animated for years without eases. I was able to tell stories fine, but shots lacked a certain finesse.
