Quick Advice

The Stage32 community welcomes every level of skill and experience to learn and to share so that everyone can be better at what it is that they do. What is the number one tip that you would give to someone just getting into Post-Production? It could be any aspect of post production, but add a little bit of your story as to why this is the tip that's at the top of your list.

I can't remember what show I got this from but my #1 tip is simply this "Trust but verify". I can remember so many occasions where I thought something was done that would make post so easy, and it wasn't, so editing it out or working around it was terribly difficult.

So my advice is that if you're going to be editing, or doing audio or any other post task. Keep close to the director, be on set if you can and make sure your getting what you need to deliver the final vision.

Trust that the director knows what they are doing, but verify that everything lines up for the next phase.

Try to adjust the way you watch content. If you're just starting out, watch some of your favorite movies and shows with specific attention to the editing. Pay attention to where the cuts are, the editing choices that are being made, how the editing affects the story and character beats, etc.

I’ve been working on 2 different music - audio pieces. In writing / editing- leave room in the music for more editing between verse / chorus.

One of my pieces written is a String / drum-Percussion piece. After listening to it for the 15th time - ha ha ;-) make sure you write music for emotions and for the scenes. It’s a great piece, … but last night I thought… how do I edit this ? It’s totally different music as an instrumental. So, plan music wisely into your film projects.
