Future of ‘Star Trek’: From ‘Starfleet Academy’ to New Movies and Michelle Yeoh, How the 58-Year-Old Franchise Is Planning for the Next Generation of Fans

I must admit that I’m an avowed Trek fan. I watched the final episode of Star Trek: Picard and thought that it must have been the best TV sci-fi writing of the century. But then…when you have 58 years and 668 hours of Trek lore to anchor it in, then you have a big universe to draw upon and that certainly showed in the storyline..

For a franchise lasting that long, there is of course the need to create new fans. Kurtzman has this view.

“You cannot create new fans to the exclusion of old fans,” Kurtzman says. “You must serve your primary fan base first and you must keep them happy. That is one of the most important steps to building new fans.”

It’s great to read about all the collaborative work that goes in to create a series, especially the Production Design and the effects budget must be massive with that amazing “AR wall”, which I first came across in “Strange New Worlds”. It was awe-inspiring.

As for the future shows, I’m really looking forward to seeing Michelle Yeoh in “Section 31”. How about you? Of the new series mentioned in this article, which one are you looking forward to the most?

I really enjoy "Strange New Worlds", Geoff Hall. It's been my favorite recent Star Trek series. I like how fun and adventurous it is. Feels closer in tune with the original series. I'm mostly looking forward to it coming back for season 3 because that cliffhanger was intense! It is incredible how much Star Trek has done in 58 years. I don't think I'll ever catch up! I've been really enjoying watching the remastered original series lately. I've never gotten a chance to try any of the Next Generation.

I was super excited to read in this article that there is talk of making a "final chapter" for the Pine-Quinto-Saldaña cast. I never thought that would happen. I didn't know they were ever trying to make a movie reuniting Pine's Kirk with his father. I would really like to see another film with that cast because they are so good at playing those roles. It's so sad that we lost Anton Yelchin. I hope they won't recast him if they do a fourth.

Sam Sokolow

I love Trek and everything they put out. Kurtzman is so good and has been his entire career. May the universe live long and prosper.

Dustin Richardson yeah, it’s a great series. I would go around to my sons and watch it. My daughter and I are watching TNG at the moment. Every season is on our TV provider and I had forgotten how wonderfully consistent the quality of the stories is. I would’ve loved to have been a fly on the wall, to observe the writing process from concept/outline to production script.

Geoff Hall

Sam Sokolow he’s a true powerhouse, with a strong work ethic! By IMDb Pro he has 19 film projects and 5 TV titles in development. He must have a great personal assistant to help him navigate all of that! Wow.
