3 Body Problem: Game of Thrones creators on why they swapped dragons for aliens

I must admit that I didn’t get into Game of Thrones, as I never wanted to play catch-up with the series, but this new show from David Benioff and DB Weiss, the makers of GoT to be launched on Netflix on March 21st, has me excited.

“The 3 Body problem is based on Liu Cixi's The Three-Body Problem [was] published in 2008, [and] has sold up to nine million copies worldwide, and won a Hugo award.”

As you can see, the IP has a pedigree, which is always helpful in capturing an audience and I will certainly be watching it in the coming week.

“Without spoiling the plot, it's about advanced aliens invading the Earth. They're fleeing an unstable solar system with three suns orbiting each other - hence the name, Three-Body Problem.”

Have you read Cixi’s book? What are your thoughts about the series?

(let’s just hope it has a better ending than GoT!)

The Three-Body Problem has sold up to nine million copies worldwide, and won a Hugo award. and the log-line is it's all about advanced aliens invading the Earth? Sounds like a winner!

I haven't read the book but I hear the series is terrific and I was a HUGE GoT fan so will give this creative team every single opportunity. Fun to be filled with anticipation about a new series!

Neat! I never got into Game of Thrones either, Geoff Hall. I haven't heard of The Three-Body Problem before. I love sci-fi, so I will have to look into both the book and the show. Thanks for sharing.

Geoff Hall

Dustin Richardson Cool, Dustin. I watched the first two episodes last night and WOW! I loved it, despite all the negative reviews on IMDb - probably from disgruntled GoTs fans who didn't like the ending! One from a guy who hadn't seen it, but had read a few reviews!! How that got past the staff as a bona fide review I'll never know. Some reviews said it was slow, but it kinda makes me feel like they have watched too many MCU movies and expect pivotal action on every scene. Who knows?

I hope you can get to see it. I'll be watching another episode tonight.

Maurice Vaughan

I saw the poster for this the other day, Geoff Hall. I didn't watch the trailer or know about the book. I want to go into the series knowing as little as possible.

Dustin Richardson

Geoff Hall, a review from a guy who hadn't seen it but had read a few reviews...? That's just sad, lol. I spend way too much time reading Rotten Tomatoes reviews just to laugh at the absurdity of some of them. I'm glad to hear you liked the show. I'll try to see it sometime. And yeah, slow isn't a bad thing as long as it's interesting. Andor could be argued as the slowest of the Star Wars shows, but it's my favorite.

Geoff Hall

Dustin Richardson Ah, I’ve not seen Andor. On the wrong streamer! Lol. To say a series is too slow just annoys me. It’s this instant gratification thing that gets in the way of patient viewing…

Geoff Hall

Maurice Vaughan I really enjoyed what I’ve seen so far, Maurice. I’ve not read the book either, and I’m not sure I’ll get around to it. Apparently, the first series will be based on the book, but the next two will be down to the screenwriters to develop the story.

Terrence Sellers

I watched the first episode last night. While I was very intrigued by some of the things done, like the winking universe bit, I take major issue with the general premise that atheist scientists are akin to religious zealots in their behavior around their beliefs concerning science.

I can see a highly religious person committing suicide if they suddenly found out the god they served for most of their life didn't exist. I have a hard time believing the same thing would happen if a scientist suddenly found out that gravity doesn't exist. The point of science is to discover things. That includes that you were wrong about something. But this show makes it seems like all these high level scientists are no different than paganists learning that Zeus isn't real.

Geoff Hall

Terrence Sellers the theme of atheism is I think a dominant aspect for the writer of the book trilogy, Cixin Liu, in the context of Mao’s cultural revolution. He puts one set of beliefs against another. The ‘science’ of the revolution against those who believe something else. We know of course that Mao’s ‘scientific’ experiment failed, with millions murdered and an economy in tatters. And yes to pit such oppositional beliefs against one another is pretty primitive philosophy and denies any sense of Taoist perceptions of the State.

As for the suicide, we learn a little more later in the series. I think Liu’s philosophy goes against any mystical notions of the self; that came across in the first couple of episodes; everything that is must be verified by empirical data, for which the domain of the scientist. It’s pretty basic stuff and not very well developed and relies on dualistic notions of ontology and epistemology.

Terrence Sellers

Geoff Hall I've now watched 7 episodes. I guess it can be argued that they skate around the suicide issue by saying the aliens were pushing people in certain directions. Overall, I think it's an OK show, but I wouldn't call it a great one.

Geoff Hall I agree with you about the "too slow" issue. I think some of it may be attributed to newer Scifi viewers or Scifi fans that are not fantasy fans. The fantasy genre almost always takes its time; the stories unwind. I think some of the best Scifi is also that way, it isn't all just ACTION.
