Screenwriting : Confused by OWAs by Göran Johansson

Göran Johansson

Confused by OWAs

As a new member I feel confused by the OWAs.

I learned screenwriting by creating no-budget films for public access television stations. So I know what practical details one must think about.

But the OWAs. Length, budget and intended audience not specified. Why not specify practical details?

Hi, Göran Johansson. Members have brought this up before. Stage 32 is working on it.

Göran Johansson

Oh dear, I should had checked. I apologize for wasting your time.

Maurice Vaughan

It's fine, Göran Johansson. You didn't waste my time.

Anthony Murphy

Göran Johansson Goran, there is a four month long thread on this topic of OWAs if you scroll down. I started the thread with the question— How many average submissions to each OWA?

Göran Johansson

Dear Anthony, I hope I will soon have the opportunity to add something to the discussion you mention.

Anthony Murphy

Tasha McLemore I'm not established, but my screenplay THE OLD MASTER has been selected for six OWAs so far.

Maria Restivo Glassner

Tasha McLemore: I think it is more about whether the request and the script align well than anything else. I sent my script in to a bunch of OWAs and didn't get through until I learned to wait for one that had a comp I actually used in reference to my project. Sure enough, it was chosen. After that, it is all up to the producers to see if it fits what they are looking for above the others, along with how well it is written, etc. Keep trying! But pay attention to the tone, style, and genre they are looking for!

Tasha McLemore

Maria Restivo Glassner: I can agree in a way, but I see the same names and have to think about what is going on sometimes. There are some very talented new writers on here who need a chance and cannot get it going against writers who are already in the game in some way. ( I have not submitted in months, but others need a chance.)

Michael Elliott

Tasha....sounds like you're advocating for a DEI approach to OWA .script selection

Tasha McLemore

Michael Elliott, I don't need it. My scripts are in the hands of agents and producers right now. I am speaking for others who are submitting now. You were rude to me once before; this is your last time.

Maria Restivo Glassner

Tasha McLemore: I would agree if there was a limit to who could be chosen. However, it doesn't seem like there is a limit to how many can be chosen to move forward as long as they fit what the request is looking for. So, the field is open to new and old writers equally.

Tasha McLemore

Maria Restivo Glassner I guess. I feel bad for the new ones that are trying. As I said, I have not submitted in a long time because I am rewriting and ensuring my scripts are where they need to be. I stopped because it was confusing to me.

Maria Restivo Glassner

Tasha McLemore Yeah, being new to writing and pitching is no joke! I have been improving my writing skills for a while and still feel like a newbie. I'm not sure when I'll start feeling seasoned, haha.

Tasha McLemore

It is very CONFUSING!!!! OMG! I have read this article, this blog, and this webcast, and I am trying to decide which way to go. I'll get it one day. I want everyone to win! That's all.
