About Helen

As part of a theater family, Helen Sedwick grew up on Broadway previews and Off-Off Broadway experiments. Her family ran a summer stock theater where she fell in love with the banter of Neil Simon and Noel Coward. After working as an advertising copywriter, Helen became the family black sheep by attending University of Chicago Law School. From there, she ventured to California where she represented entrepreneurs, from the admirable to the vile. She raised her identical twin daughters and wrote fiction. It was a busy time.
Helen’s novel COYOTE WINDS was published in 2013 and her SELF-PUBLISHER’S LEGAL HANDBOOK was named a top resource for independent authors by Publisher’s Weekly. At conferences and on podcasts, she strived to demystify legal concepts for writers. If she couldn’t write the Great American Novel, she would help someone else do it.
Helen’s experience at translating legalese went into high gear when her home and neighborhood burned down in the 2017 PG&E wildfires. She became a public face for fire victims in community meetings, the courts, and the press. With other volunteers, she helped thousands get back on their feet financially, and they changed the course of the bankruptcy proceeding.
Now retired from law, Helen is writing full-time. Her screenplays have placed in The Writers Lab, Austin Film Festival, CineStory, and other competitions. Current work includes Taking Wing (animated feature), Muffler Man (comedy feature), 10 Million (crime feature), and an adaptation of her novel Coyote Winds (coming-of-age feature). And more screenplays are in the works.
