How I Came To Love Movies: When I was little my parents smoked; Not like how some people have the occasional cigarette - my parents each had a 40-to-60 a-day habit. At nighttime I watched through itchy eyes as the smoke wafted its way up the staircase and into my bedroom. Thankfully my parents gave up smoking when I began having breathing issues. They put the money they would have spent on cigarettes into an old fashioned sweet jar and within two weeks of quitting had saved enough to buy a video-player. The first VHS we ever rented was BACK TO THE FUTURE, which is still - even after all these years of watching the critically acclaimed greats - my absolute favorite Hollywood movie. Its clever, tightly-woven structure about a life altering moment delivers pure joy and wish fulfillment. After watching the movie, I was hooked: I became a two-movie- a-night addict, and the course of my life had been determined. So, yes, I could equate movies with breathing - but let's not labor the metaphor.
