Pilot Logline

As office gossip suggests imminent layoffs, a scrappy copywriter moonlighting as a screenwriter contemplates unemployment, when an untimely event puts things into perspective.

SYNOPSIS:

A half-hour long office comedy meets coming-of-age drama TV series set in present day, anchored around the story of two 20-something women trying to strike a balance between focusing on their career and following their dreams. Maddie, a self-proclaimed loner and aspiring screenwriter, works as a copywriter at a movie marketing company by day while spending her spare minutes working on various film scripts. Agnes, her best friend, is a gifted musician and comes from an affluent family, although she does her best to hide it. She works for the same company as a video editor and moonlights as the lead singer and bass player of a punk band.

The series follows the duality of the girls lives as they deal with the day-to-day demands of their jobs while carving out time for their creative pursuits. At the office, they’re joined by a barrage of familiar personalities representative of most modern corporate environs. The gossip, the ass- kisser, the corporate climber and the like, along with an over-the-top executive team that makes the antagonists in Horrible Bosses seem bearable. As we dig into the comedic storylines that unfold amidst their immediate team members, touching on topics like motherhood, nepotism, narcotics and sociopathic behavior, the series evolves into a deeper exploration of how we choose to spend the fleeting moments of each day.

Outside of the office, Maddie spends most nights hammering away on her laptop from her favorite table inside her local bar, honing her stories and hoping for a break. Meanwhile, Agnes regularly rehearses with her band, playing small shows and open mic nights, producing a majority of the songwriting herself.

Examining themes of loyalty and betrayal, growing up and growing old, season one culminates with a feeling of hope as doors open and our protagonists are presented with opportunities beyond their wildest fantasies. Subsequent seasons explore how what makes us feel secure may be the very thing holding us back and how Maddie and Agnes’ successes and triumphs inspire, influence or alienate the people closest to their hearts – including each other.
