Mauro, It's a tough transition to make, for sure. When I staff up my departments, I'm always looking for editors with the strongest TV resume. If my "go-to" regulars are all working, I'll move into le...

Unreal Engine 5.3 launched and it's a game-changer! I can't get over how incredible it looks! Do any of our members use Unreal Engine? What are your thoughts on the updates?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POwTaVZ_CA0...
Expand postMarcel Nault Jr. why are you concerned about it for animation? Or do you just mean that's what interests you about it?
Yes, Unreal Engine is great. It can bring down the cost of CGI from ~$2k/finished second to ~$1500/finished second on some projects. Even lower, if you don't want anything original.
Laurie Ashbourne A bit of both. I'm concerned because of the budget involved, its limitations and its practicality, like I said. It's still an amazing engine though.
Many of our 3D students use Unreal just as a renderer, after creating their films elsewhere. Any new advances should be good news for them.
Marcel Nault Jr. It has yet to be fully explored as a feature animation tool, but there are many using it. This new release will increase that. The reason is because it changes the traditional animati...

Expand commentWhenever people complain about "bad CGI" they're usually talking about bad 3d modeling/animation. Reminds me of when people ask me why the VFX in older movies looks better than today's. It's because a lot of times when people work on a shot, it STAYS that shot so everyone's effort can be towards THAT SHOT, but sometimes the people in charge see the gag and add more gags and more shots but don't change the deadline so things get compromised.

Great share! Thanks @Ashley! It's so true for all of film/TV, people find that ONE THING to rip a project, but it takes HUNDREDS of people to make a film happen, especially when it comes to projects that feature so much VFX!

Great point, Kenneth Lui - the workflow has a lot to do with the results. But VFX are so prevalent now that it's easy to judge instead of being awed, which I usually am :)

Expand commentHere's an article I just watched last night and it's dead ass accurate. Reminds me of a time when I was at this one studio and right in the middle of the show, they let us know were on for "12/6's" (12 hours days, 6 day weeks) which you're like "hmm, more OT I guess" but you do miss dinner with your family. It's an awful work/life balance which is why I'd look up and see more single unmarried folk on a lotta shows.
