Hey, Stage 32 producers Lounge!
Let’s talk about the groundbreaking Netflix series Adolescence, which has taken the world by storm. This four-part drama isn’t just another show—it’s a cinematic masterpiece that redefines storytelling.
What sets Adolescence apart is its bold decision to film each episode in a single, continuous shot. This technique immerses viewers in the raw, unfiltered emotions of the characters, creating a sense of naturalism that’s rarely seen on screen. The seamless choreography between the cast and crew is nothing short of extraordinary, bringing an authenticity to the performances that resonates deeply with audiences.
Adolescence has garnered an impressive 24.3 million views on Netflix, securing its position as the platform's top show. And if that’s not enough, it’s also earned a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, cementing its place as a critical and commercial triumph.
This series is a testament to the power of innovative filmmaking and the importance of casting talent that can deliver under such unique and challenging conditions. It’s a reminder that bold creative choices can lead to unforgettable storytelling.
Have you watched Adolescence yet? Let’s discuss how this series is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in television. Share your thoughts below. I’d love to hear your take on this one-of-a-kind production!

Never heard of it, but I'll certainly check it out. Is it the next "Baby Reindeer?"

I've heard people raving about Adolescence on social media, Sandra Isabel Correia. I plan on checking it out. I've always thought that making one-shot movies was really difficult because if something goes wrong, they have to start all the way over. And I didn't know there were one-shot shows. I'm guessing a lot of rehearsal goes into making a one-shot movie/show.

Dustin Quinteros I believe it will be bigger, because it has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and everybody talks or writes about it on social media. It's a masterpiece, and the way it was shot, is unique.

They shot all the takes in five shooting days. Maurice Vaughan, and for the financial budget, makes the diference. In the second episode, it is amazing how they shot the last scene with two drones without any cuts. It's very interesting to read about the production, because we gain new ideas for us also. They had all the team and cast together, so they supported each other, and the script was broken in a different way than usual to make it easier. You must watch it!

Five days is fast, Sandra Isabel Correia! I'm not sure what's the usual time to film an episode though.

es extraordinaria. hasta tal punto que son plano continuo, nunca hay corte en la cámara .(si lo hay debe ser muy sutil, porque no se nota)

It’s incredible Maurice Vaughan and when you will watch, you will see the difference. Only has four episodes, today will be my last one!

I think if there is a cut, is when each episode ends. It’s incredible Alejandro Marello and the conversation between Jamie and the psychologist at the third episode is something from another world, almost 30m of dialogue without one cut! It’s genius.

I haven't watched it yet but your post is literally the 8th time it's been discussed or brought up to me in the last 24 hours. They've already achieved a rare thing these days - watercooler talk (as a concept). I cant wait to watch it!

This is such a powerful breakdown, Sandra Isabel Correia! Thank you for spotlighting Adolescence and opening up this conversation! I haven’t watched it yet, but I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve been hearing nothing but great things over the last few days! Can’t wait to see how the single-take approach plays out on screen.

And I learned something with you now Sam Sokolow “ Watercooler talk” I never heard that and I went to google the meaning:)) Thank you. Yes, now you must watch it, it’s worth it and besides how is shot, is the deep of the feeling makes us feel! A masterpiece.

I had to share it Ashley Renee Smith , because, aside from the fact that it was filmed in one take per episode and it's a story that punches us in the stomach, in the same week, Netflix launched "Electric State," one of the most expensive films ever made with high expectations; and Adolescence, a Brit UK, with a much lower budget, hits 100% of the score besides the 24 million viewers on his debut. For me, this means that the story is what matters, and we don't need millions to be successful.

Sandra Isabel Correia thank you, Sandra, I will watch it. And Reacher, yes a different beast and nothing that I aspire to. I watched the first two series and it was a ‘great romp’, as we say in England. Series three, although it’s breaking Prime viewing records, it just feels a lot more mechanical and action trope-like expectations are imposed on it. I will watch it to the end, but I can’t wait to watch Adolescence.

I am watching Reacher also Geoff Hall, but I liked more the previous series. The third is too mechanical. Yes, see Adolescence and let us know what you think. Happy Sunday, my friend.

Sandra Isabel Correia I love this clip from an interview with Stephen Graham, Sandra. He really speaks to the heart:

Thank you for sharing Geoff Hall. Stephen Graham speaks to the heart, and I believe he had the idea to write the script because his kids are young, and he is aware of the challenges adolescents have now. Have you seen it already? The impact of this show is so great that the Portuguese police created emoji meaning boards and are holding public sessions to educate parents. All of this is because of the social respect shown by the show. Without a doubt, filmmakers carry a significant responsibility within our society. I spoke with his wife, Hannah Walter’s ( exec ) and they are so proud because they didn’t expected this success and they are changing mindsets :))

Sandra Isabel Correia I have just finished episode 2. The Police are really irritating me! But the environment in the school was awful. I like what Stephen Graham said about education contributing to the whole adolescent phenomenon. The big question after that episode is ‘what can we do about that?’ Especially when government is fundamentally incapable of answering that question and changing the way we educate our children. That is a big concern for my two grandsons and how they would cope with that kind of antagonistic climate?

Ah! Ah! Geoff Hall .Happened the same to me with the Police :) The school in the show is a mirror of many schools. In the UK, the Prime Minister spoke about the TV show and the importance of it. Well, I believe the first step is done: to share about the emoji culture and, as parents, to be aware of it and speak with the kids about it, if they know that. For me, discovering the true meaning of the emoji was a significant revelation. Also, they can hold public sessions and educate about it, like some charities do with sexual assault and consent in UK schools and universities.

Sandra Isabel Correia yeah, that was a revelation to me as well, Sandra, about the emoji culture. I liked the way that Adam, the detective's son stepped forward to help his dad.

For me, it was the same Geoff Hall. I never heard about it, but this means that this TV Show is really changing the parents culture and ours :) Yes, that scene was really good, and their relationship improved for the better.

Absolutely heart wrenching. Just finished it - the one shot cinematography is brilliant. The acting is raw and realistic. The writing - I would love to know how much was scripted and how much was the off-the-cuff acting Woody Allen style. I personally was extremely confronted by my lack of understanding of the current language of emojis and the psychological trauma inherent in the user's understanding of the world. This series both educated and entertained.

Amanda Dettrick Hi Amanda, there’s probably no scope for improvisation of a scene, as everything is choreographed, from camera and sound, to the actor’s movements.
I’m going to watch episode 3 soon. Episode 2 was distressing, to see the state of education in the UK.

I am happy for that Pat Savage. You are a father and you need to see it! Besides the fact how it was filmed, in one shote per take.

Amanda Dettrick, you are right, it’s absolutely heart wrenching. The one shot is one of the things that surprised me, it was the first time I saw it! I would love to read the script to see the differences. Also for me, the use of emojis was surprising and I read that Adolescence script according to Stephen Graham “ isn’t based on a single real-life case, but Graham revealed that the series was inspired by the growing knife-crime epidemic in the U.K.
“There was an incident where a young boy [allegedly] stabbed a girl,” Graham told Netflix’s Tudum. “It shocked me. I was thinking, ‘What’s going on? What’s happening in society where a boy stabs a girl to death? What’s the inciting incident here?’ And then it happened again, and it happened again, and it happened again. I really just wanted to shine a light on it, and ask, ‘Why is this happening today? What’s going on? How have we come to this?’" This was the reason he came the idea to write the story.

The real time aspect adds a different dimension. Both the practical problem- solving and the timing tensions that real time demands are amazing. For instance, the 3 minute drive from home to police station is amazing.

That 3 minute is amazing and also the transition from the School with the Police to the school memorial outside with The Father arriving with flowers. They used two drones to film this transition without cuts. Adolescence is a masterclass in all senses, in my opinion. Thank for sharing Bill Jordan

NO SPOILER ALERTS IN THIS COMMENT. Sandra Isabel Correia - thanks for starting this thread! I just started watching this and am thrilled we have a discussion going on about this. One of our team members brought this up on a team meeting and I am blown away by this show on so many levels. Not just the story, which makes you think about so many things from a child, parent, school, authority and society perspective, but also I am just blown away by the incredible preparation and planning by this crew to pull off these episodes in one take. I want to get this AD in to teach a webinar on how they did this. I finished episode 2 and I definitely don't want to binge this. Instead, I'm watching it one at a time to digest the story. It's so well done.

I think that's a fantastic idea, Amanda Toney! Getting the AD to teach a webinar on how they pulled off the episodes in one take.

No spoilers no Amanda Toney, I want you to see and digest all the show one at a time, because it’s a very deep show and touches all of our angles. I wanted to bring this thread because everyone must be aware of it. Last update from March 26th, Adolescence had 66.3 millions views. This made it the most-watched show on Netflix ever. The impact of this show is so big that the Portuguese Police created emoji meaning boards and are holding public sessions to educate parents. It’s incredible. I love the idea to have a webinar with the AD to teach how they did the one take. I saw some footage about it and it’s incredible because even them didn’t know if it will work well. If you need some help Amanda, let me know. I speak with Hannah Walters, one of the executive producers and co founder of The Matriarch Productions who co-produce Adolescence. It is so well done and real. Happy my post is useful :)**
