About Terri

I started my career as a technical writer, became a software developer and systems architect. I’m poly-lingual. I've translated from Chinese, Spanish and French, published articles on medical, technical and business topics, and written lots of software manuals. I’ve traveled to and through many places in the US, a little in Canada, the Caribbean, and a few places in Europe. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in China, returning repeatedly from my first trip in 1990 to 2018. I'm an accomplished internal martial artist with 3 international titles and 40 years competition and teaching experience. I’ve volunteered with Hour of Code for kids and led community groups. Hello. Pleased to meet you.

As I’ve been navigating what I’m going to do next, a good friend I met here reminded me that my credentials and my background make a difference. It’s not only what I’m trying to do now that matters. What I’ve done matters, too. I’ve done a few things. It’s hard for me to “toot my own horn” even though I used to play trumpet (Seriously, second and then first chair in my high school band). But I can’t not do it. (Phoo on the double negative.) How else is anyone is going to know?

So I’ve added a few things to my “awards” list that aren’t the same as most of what is here. I’m okay with that. I’m not the same and probably won’t ever be the same. I’ve always been just a little different. And that is why I’m here. We are all here together, different and the same. Welcome to my world.

Terri holds a Bachelor's degree in English with minors in Psychology, Theatre / Dance, and Languages from the University of Missouri at Kansas City (1982). In 1983, she entered Florida Atlantic University to work on a Master's degree in Linguistics. In addition to English and near-native Mandarin, she has studied Spanish and can read a little French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Dutch, and Classical Greek.

Terri has been a senior member, chapter past-President, and ITPC (International Technical Publications Competition) Judge for the Society for Technical Communication. She has also been a member of the National Association for Female Executives and the Independent Computer Consultants Association. She has served as an advisor for Junior Achievement's Globe program, a judge for SIFE's National Competition (Students In Free Enterprise), and an advisor for NSTEP (National Science and Technology Education Partnership). She is an active member of Mensa. She is regularly invited to review technical presentations for several international groups.

And then there is my connection with China and the Chinese Martial Arts. I've spent most of my life studying the arts. They are part me. They are part of who I am. Welcome to my world. :-)

Unique traits: Expert skills in the Internal Chinese Martial Arts (taiji, xingyi, bagua), sword, and push hands. 32nd generation Shaolin disciple. 30 years experience in China. Fluent in Mandarin Chinese. Translation and simultaneous interpreting for the English/Chinese pair. 会汉语还可以翻译。好高兴见到您。
