Hello, everyone!
Thought I'd introduce myself by saying that my favorite film is an obscure one, and yes, it's flawed but I cry tears of joy every time I see it. Big Eden was released in 2000. It was written and directed by Thomas Bezucha (who most recently directed a couple of episodes of Fargo, Season 5 as well as Christmas crowd-pleaser The Family Stone). It has the feeling of a first feature, granted. There are definite areas that could have been improved upon.
Yet this film taught me that underneath my urban bravado as a pretentious New York gay man, I really was a small-town guy at heart. I love movies that reveal something about myself that I didn't know before. This film has such a big heart and dreams a big dream--a gay positive town in Montana? Dang, sign me up. And I searched for such a town, knowing that it exists. Or rather they exist. Both Laramie, Wyoming, and Fairfield, Iowa have a bit of this flavor.
Do you have a favorite film that is off the beaten path, that comes from your own singular individuality? I'm more interested in hearing from those who aren't in the set of The Godfather, Chinatown, Citizen Kane, Vertigo, or whatever big-name director's magnum opus. Maybe your favorite film is Muriel's Wedding or something unexpected. Maybe you feel a little guilty about it. I sometimes feel a little embarrassed about my favorite film. But I have my own rubric.
Please share. And let me know if you'd like to know more about me.
Can't wait to see what you and your team have been cooking, Pat Semler!
