Johanna Beale Keller is an award-winning playwright and lyricist. In 2024, her plays were produced at Gallery Players Theater in Brooklyn, Theatre Three in Port Jefferson, L.I., and at WordWave Festival Valhalla in Lake Tahoe, CA. Last year her plays were seen in Houston, San Diego, and Manassas VA, and won awards from the SC Theatre Association, and the Central PA Playwriting Competition. She wrote and directed the film, The Perfect Match, featured in NYC’s 2023 Rogue Theater Festival, and her radio drama, The Foley Guy: A Romance, won the 2023 Atlanta Fringe Festival Audio Critics Award, as well as awards for Best Writing, Best Mixing, and Most Creative. With jazz singer Hanna Richardson, she co-wrote a comedy revue, ‘Cuse Cabaret, that played to sold-out houses for the past two seasons.
She is an award-winning journalist (The New York Times, ASCAP Deems-Taylor Award, Front Page Award, Los Angeles Times, London Evening Standard), and music critic (Opera Magazine, Opera News, The Hopkins Review, Strad Magazine). A nationally-known advocate of arts journalism, she is a four-time judge of the Pulitzer Prizes (in criticism) and holds an emerita professorship at Syracuse University where she founded the Goldring arts journalism graduate program at the S.I. Newhouse School.
She gardens in Upstate New York.
