The plot follows our footloose and fancy-free hero from his birth and childhood (in the prologue) through his years as a young adult, through lusty entanglements with various women. fights, duels, songs, dances, and a narrow escape from the gallows where he is about to be hanged for a crime he did not commit. At long last he is restored to the arms of his one true love, and the other principal characters are properly paired as the curtain falls. Running time: 2 hours 40 minutes, excluding intermission. The play requires a large cast of 39 actor-singer-dancers, all of whom perform multiple roles under the Actors' Equity Favored Nations Agreement The "painterly" scenery represents multiple, cinematically rapidly changing locales. Period costumes may be described as a "designer's wet dream." Orchestra: minimum 24 players per requirements of Local 802, parity with cast.
