As we approach the new year I have decided to reexamine my position as an aspiring screenwriter. I have been chipping away at many projects trying to realize a specific style for my writing. I am completely satisfied with my progress considering I am a full time business owner, husband and father of two. I also recently founded a Non-profit organization teaching creative arts to at risk youth. Needless to say, stealing away time to practice my writing is almost forbidden though I manage to do so daily.
Recently I joined The North Texas Screenwriters Group which is a local gathering focused on networking, growing and fine tuning our craft as individuals through group discussions and constructive criticism. I am happy with the return thus far. I have found an audience of other local writers wading in a similar position. It is nice to be able to bounce ideas off of one another and receive tips and tricks to better approach the craft. I chose to seek out a group that meets in person based on what I read about screenwriting groups in previous lounge discussions. I am glad I did.
My writing is definitely taking shape and I am satisfied with the growth of my skill set. I am always looking to expand my knowledge and abilities so nothing ever seems like quite enough satisfaction, however I can appreciate the work involved in becoming seasoned in anything. I have a sickening amount of patience. One thing I have found to be incredibly helpful is reading other scripts. I am currently reading Avatar By: James Cameron
I have been in contact with Film Connections which is a film school of sorts based out of LA with a convenient branch located right here in Dallas. The program sounds promising and very lucrative for anyone wanting to sneak into the industry. I am anxious to figure out how it all works and decide whether or not it would be a good fit for me. It seems they pair you with an actual working producer/director/writer (mentor) that not only has current projects but also past successes and the tuition is ridiculously affordable. It almost seems to good to be true.
Anyone here in a similar position as me? Working on anything that is exciting, interesting or just plain exhausting lately? Any experience with writers groups or the Film Connections program? Anything you can share about your journey is welcomed. I appreciate the Stage 32 platform and the opportunity to communicate the growth that we share.
