Absurdities is a multimedia installation piece which shows several scenes of an Asian woman on a deserted beach (Dungeness) searching for something, finding a plant and eating it at a table in front of a wrecked boat. The film tries to challenge and disturb viewers with its subject, use of different visual media (16mm film and digital video), multiscreens and performance art. The content of the film is comprised of three different scenes; the opening scene moves up on the woman who is looking for something by a shack on the deserted beach. She finds a pot of flowers buried in the stones of the beach. There is then a scene of her eating petals from the flowers at a table by the boat and we see that she is wearing lipstick which is painted in the shape of a square. The last scene shows her looking at the camera and smearing the lipstick off her face – maybe to show her defiance at the normal conventions of being a woman such as wearing lipstick. All these scenes have some absurd elements such as the way of her wearing makeup or trying to eat flowers with cutlery.
