Cattle Camps are large areas where herders hold cattle for wealthy individuals who own hundreds of cattle at a time. These cattle are essential for marrying a woman in South Sudanese culture, as well as maintaining a status in the community. However, with the recent price of dowry rising, raiding and shootouts are becoming common practice. Cattle Camps play a historic role of South Sudanese culture, but recently due to conflicts between tribes, there are regular talks of disbanding them altogether with the modernization of this brand new country. Obakki has implemented a pilot project which hopes to preserve this dying tradition by drilling boreholes and livestock watering stations in the cattle camps, eliminating the fight for territory.
