When did you start marketing your projects?

Hi all - this may seem like a dumb question but when did you start promoting your projects? I'm still in pre-production on a web series at the moment but was curious when others starting putting stuff out there about your soon to be projects. Thanks for the info. Learning as I go!

I start marketing feature project the day I start formal development.

It's changed from days past. In today's social media world it seems to be a steady drip of information from beginning to end of your project cycle focused at a specific demographic or affinity group. Loyalty comes from being a trusted source of referral to an opt in subscriber base. It's the loyal who will spread the word for you...in a word of mouth style.

You should be thinking about marketing as early as possible. Definitely once you go into preproduction. Announce each actor as they are cast, as you find great locations, create great wardrobe pieces, etc etc. then be consistent in promoting your film from there on out.

I believe the marketing for a project starts as soon as the idea hits. As someone mentioned todays social media world allows others to get a peek into wjat your into and with that being said giving a day by day (well not day by day)but clear look and perspective to possible fans and followers an insight can lead to a great event.

Right now. You want to build momentum so when the project drops you won't be starting from scratch. Give people updates periodically, take pictures of the casting session, the table read. Take behind the scenes shots when you begin filming. Take pictures of when you're scouting locations. There's a great app called Magisto which takes your pics and makes thenm into a small film. Great app to have. Tweet EVERYTHING. Build an audience now so you won't have to in the future. Involve your perspective audience in the process.
