First Time Composing For Live Orchestra

The first gig that has a big enough budget to record a full orchestra has just come my way and I want to see if anyone has had experience with this. There is a unionized orchestra in town, but my budget isn't big enough to pay each musician $50/hour. I've had the idea of contacting a local college or university with a decent symphony program that may accept a nice donation in exchange for performing my pieces. Any other ideas people?

Hi Sean, You actually have several options. I always encourage staying local. Union's often have "one-off" contracts they can negotiate, specially for lower-budget films, contact your local contractor. If you want to do LA, there is a remote-recording company called Hollywood Scoring, you can email Noah there, and he might be able to work something out, or give you some options with your budget, that way you get the LA players, their instruments, and the stages (MGM/Sony, Fox, WarnerBros, the Bridget, Capitol, etc) http://hollywoodscoring.com/ Or Nashville: http://nashvillemusicscoring.com/ If you want to go out of the country, there are some technical hurdles you have to jump through (stems, foldbacks, tuning, etc, sync via skype, etc), but it will fit your budget. There is a pretty good group in Bratislava: http://www.bso.sk/ Here is Prague: http://www.smeckymusicstudios.com/ Sydney is not bad either. http://www.clicktrackmusic.com.au/sso/ Best, Sam
