Auditioning...

(Alyn on Acting) You would think that every actor brings something unique to an audition. Not true, they usually all bring with them the same interpretation as every other actor at the same audition, reading the same material. It would amaze you how similar their initial thoughts, about the ‘sides’ they are to perform, are to your initial thoughts. Unfortunately, that’s where most actors stop their interpretation, and that’s why they all appear to be the same. It’s so terribly important that you remember, before you walk into that room to audition, to look deeper inside, to stretch yourself and find those character choices that resonate with you internally. Every role provides a pathway that allows you to make the piece uniquely your own. You just have to reach for it. Search for those things in the character most like you, use them as a guide to create real and meaningful depth that that will help you invent nuances you can solidly add to your characterization. Understand what is being said and why, even if you have to make it up. Make each line come alive with multi-leveled tone and expression, mannerism and trait, movement and underlying action. That’s how you stand out in an audition.
