Days in the classroom, nights at the keyboard

Happy New Year to everyone in Stage 32. I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and will have a healthy, happy and prosperous 2015. I have been teaching Broadcast Journalism for over 25 years and that is my job. I am fortunate enough to love what I do and help young people achieve their dreams. My family is my heart and my passion. I think about them in almost every waking moment. They are the river that flows through my veins. But, writing has always occupied a large part of my soul. Ever since I was very young I have have taken pen to paper, and type to hard drive in an effort to share the creative stories and rhymes that have been swirling, stewing, and manifesting in my mind. I would love for one of my screenplays to one day be made into a film. I once read that each character is a part of the writer's being. The reader/viewer thinks that these so-called fictional beings come to life when they first appear on the page or screen. However, in reality, they are alive an well in the author's heart, mind, and soul. I find this to be true. I know these women and men, girls and boys, as well as I know myself. And I guess my dream is for others to get to know them, too. Writing is a blessing and a curse. The creative process is full of promise, excitement and fulfillment. It is also rife with frustration, angst, anger, and loneliness. But, as I tell my students, if you can write well, you can write your own ticket. Hopefully, one day, I will be able to punch my ticket.
