Anything Goes : Is it a movie? by Scott Bernstein

Is it a movie?

People in the film industry want to know one thing: “Is it a movie?” What is your take, especially from a guy like myself that cannot pay big fees to a screenwriter to adapt a winning manuscript. Read below and let me know if you agree or disagree with my assessment. I need input! I have 3 spectacular non-fiction works and need advice. By pitching your book out of the gate, do you have the opportunity to show prospective producers your project in its purest form. If they can “see” the movie adaptation of your book just from reading it, are you in good shape? An interested producer will make an offer to option your intellectual property (more on that later) and eventually hire professional writers to adapt the book into a screenplay. (???) If books are written in a way that can immediately call to mind how it will look on screen, will it cause people to turn it down. What is the best avenue or road best traveled?

If a producer can see a movie in your book they will option the screen rights. The producer will hire a screenwriter to adapt it into a screenplay. The best avenue or best road traveled is to write a book that a producer feels will make a great movie. There's no secret. It's not easy. Take a look at previous films made from non-fiction books. I think you'll find that it rare that the writer is also the screenwriter. You don't have to pay big fees to a screenwriter. Let the producer do that ofter they option the rights to your work.
