I wrote a musical, and have recently been contacted about how much I charge for royalties. I have no idea where to even begin. Does anyone know any resources I could look into?
Musicals can be very different from other music projects - you might want to consider a lump sum charge for your work before rehearsals start and then an amount based on the number of performances. Keep in contract clauses about not only first run performances but also subsequent 'revivals' and road performances as well. Then also make mention of rights/payments for films if it every gets adopted, rights/payments for soundtracks, and rights/payments for any sheet music. As far as the actual amount of payments (lump sums, profit sharing, etc.), I will defer to those who are here, if any, who have written for live theater. Also keep in mind that theater outside of Manhattan might come at different pricings. You should definitely interact with other theatrical composers to find out what they contracts and rates have been.
