Screenwriting : Advice from Jerry Seinfeld you should listen to. by Stacy Gentile

Advice from Jerry Seinfeld you should listen to.

OK. I haven't sold a single screenplay yet ... not even 1 stupid option ... nada, zip, buttkiss. This is why I have a day job, and a night job and a weekend job doing consulting / marketing stuff. I came across this little juicy bit and thought it was a must share. Grab a red marker, a calendar and start making red "Xs" for whatever it is you are passionate about. http://www.getsidekick.com/blog/dont-break-the-chain?utm_source=email&ut...

I seriously need to do this.

Beth Fox Heisinger

This was great! Change a habit into a behavior. :) Funny, this stuff works on toddlers too. LOL!

This is why a lot of comedians use Twitter. I know one guy won't get out of bed until he's written a joke and posted it on Twitter. I have written a heap of jokes too and posted them on my Twitter account. You get noticed when you do that. I am still working on my behaviour becoming habit, but for some of us it is harder work than others, but that's okay. I'm not a terrible person just challenging.

Making writing and networking a real priority is a challenge when you have three different jobs! Slotting in your writing and networking time each day, even if it's just three 10 min. sessions, might help. Having projects you are excited about is the best motivation. When I'm "in the zone," I can't wait to get up and start writing where I left off the day before. For me, the biggest challenge isn't the writing itself but trying to find ways to get my scripts to the right people. Don't give up!

Jean-Pierre Chapoteau

@ Alle, can I view some of your more recent work? I would really like the inspiration.

Shawn Speake

I've used this technique, but I stopped after a few months because red ink is harder to wipe off my extra-large dry erase calendar - hands-down the most effective piece of equipment in the lab. For me, planning is everything. And seeing my plan, not dreams, but goals, happen on a daily basis, and checked off on my calendar, inspires me. Whether it's red x's, or whatever, don't sleep on the power of the calendar.

Alle, do you have any DVDs of your features available? Would love to see the one that screened at Cannes. Can you get them on Amazon or places like that?

Jean-Pierre Chapoteau

I'm pretty good at hunting people's films down. What are your films called so I can start the hunt?

Anton West

Jean-Pierre, the Cannes film is called Something about AJ. I've seen clips from it. Owen and Bo, I believe there were actually DVDs of it available at one time. Not officially distributed though so far as I know. From a FB page of Alle's: 'GOLD NUMBERED Autographed Limited Edition now available. Price varies on country so please enquire. Special KIDS IN CAGES Bonus DVD with every purchase before 31 October 2011. Additional Short Film Collection with 6 Hollywood Award Winning Films, Commissions and dozens of other surprises! Also available at a reduced price when purchased with SAA Limited Edition!'

@Owen… Lol! … I feel it too! … Happy Friday, People!

Hey CJ, for me it's doing something daily to push my writing forward; researching, writing, reading other scripts, helping other writers, studying or taking time to use my imagination. I feel forcing some sort of rigid work plan doesn't quite work with creative endeavors. Some days creativity flows better than on others, there is a natural ebb and flow that shouldn't be forced into some "box." The daily commitment to set aside time everyday to focus on your writing -- your end goal -- is worthy all within itself. ...Well, unless you have a deadline. ;)

Shawn Speake

You're so right about that, Beth. Great post! I have to mix it up in the lab to stay sane, too. Writing is hard work and being creative on demand is even harder. The ten week Skype class I just took with GITS showed me that. I finished class with a 55 page first draft of APARICIO. All that planning and I still wasn't prepared for the challenge of writing a movie in ten weeks. It was enlightening and humbling. I got to step-up my game.

To avoid doing the same thing everyday, I stack projects. I have 3 stories, each in a different phase: Creating, Re-writing, and Polishing. KINGSTOWN is being polished / finished, for now anyway, and we add FRIEND OR FOE. Rinse and repeat. Some days are actually fun!

Beth Fox Heisinger

Rinse and repeat! I love it, Shawn!

Beth Fox Heisinger

Yes, so true, CJ! There's so much consideration behind typing those well-thought and chosen words -- a process. To me, it's quality verses quantity. :)
