Hey GiVan, this is Beth from the Stage 32 team. I just wanted to let you know I moved your post from Screenwriting to Film & TV Discussion, as it fits much better there. Let me know if you have any questions, and all the best to you!
I'm with Anthony, Terminator 2 and all three Back to the Future films, superb writing, tremendous story telling - also, the original Planet of the Apes with Charlton Heston and the original Mad Max even though they appear a little dated, one can still appreciate the quality.
In my opinion, a better all round film. Arnie sent back to protect a young boy from an evil Skynet creation beats an evil Skynet creation chasing down a woman any day. That, and the action sequences in 2 are top drawer and the effects were way ahead of its time. It also has a lot of heart and the end still makes me tear up every time. Nostalgia also probably plays a big part. My absolute favourite as a kid.
I just came back from Paris and took a tour with a company called "Set in Paris." Their tours are designed around movies that were made in Paris, as well as filmmaking in France in general. They told me "Midnight in Paris" has generated a lot of tourism for the city and took us to the cafe where Owen Wilson sat at the end of the film, and the door that he went through on his first time travel, as well as a few other sites. They said Owen Wilson is now a regular in Paris and they see him from time to time. I love the film, just watched it again when I got back. I enjoy time travel films in general, but usually they are sci-fi. "Midnight" made time travel so romantic, plus I love Paris, so I guess it's my favorite for now.
I completely agree with your last sentence. That's why it's one of my favorites. I'm betting you'd like Eternal sunshine of a spotless mind as well. thanks for sharing :-).
I agree with you about Midnight in Paris since it didn't get into the headache that time travel plot lines induce when handled in science fiction. Midnight in Paris is just nostalgic fantasy that appreciates a different era. On the other hand, sometimes I like a good headache. I wrote a review of the new Terminator movie and how it can be taken as a single victory where humans blow up the supercomputer base, or as one section of a sandbox of new story ideas with infinite losses and victories resulting from decisions made before and after the events of the current movie. You're the first person to say something nice to me about the new Terminator movie. I had decided not to see it, but now... maybe I will check it out, so I can better appreciate your review. The first one was one of my absolute favorites for a very long time. I've watched it repeatedly. The early sequels disappointed me, and I left the franchise a while ago.
The current terminator isn't too bad, we have read/heard the reviews so we do not go into the cinema with any illusions nor great expectations - on that premise, the film is good, not great, but an occasional great moment and a few good laughs, without question, the film is NOTHING without Arnie.
"Portrait of Jennie" --- only Jennie time travels so she can mature into a young woman and be the age of Evan, the artist who loves her and paints her picture.
Not certain they comply strictly as time travel, but I loved PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED with Nicolas Cage and Kathleen turner - also THE FAMILY MAN, again with Nicolas Cage and Tea Leoni - absolutely love both beautifully made films.
Back to the Future, and Back to the Future III, The Butterfly Effect, Men in Black 1, Star Trek: The Journey Home; and, for sure, Groundhog Day! Otherwise, I often balk when I see time travel will be involved in a film. Very rare for it to not have glaring plot holes or huge scientific inaccuracies. And if I hear a time travel movie cover a plot hole with the word "quantum" one more time.... !
Ohhh love the butterfly effect forgot about that one and Donnie darko, and I really liked Interstellar even though I know everyone complained about the scientific inaccuracies in that one!

Oh, for me it's a toss up between Terminator and Back to the Future. They both give me everything I want from their genres!

The Deer Hunter (any Always Sunny fans?). Seriously though, have to go with Terminator 2.

I did actually! I guess I didn't see it exactly as a time travel movie, but now that you mention it, I guess it kind of was.

12 Monkeys is great and so is the TV show. And of course there is the classic Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure
Oh, yes, Bill and Ted, pardon the pun, but it was an excellent adventure.
